January 12 update: The 2012 route will spend much time in the mountains of Northern Spain with the most southern point being Madrid on the last day. Unlike, this year's Giro and Tour, the Vuelta is embracing the mountains. In total, there will be 13 medium or high mountain stages with 10 hill or summit finishes. The organizers have added more action (hills/mountains) to the 2012 race while shortening it by 50 km. The longest stage will be 194 km, the downhill stage from Andorra to Barcelona on day 9. As in past years, there will an opening team time trial this time in Pamplona and there is only one 40 km individual time trial occurring at the half point (stage 11). With so many hilltop finishes and lack of indvidual time trialing, this looks like Joaquim Rodriguez' best shot to win a Vuelta. It also looks like a good route for Igor Anton who started the 2011 race very slowly after crashing out of the 2010 race while leading it. There appears to be only three stages for sprinters. — Steve
