La quinta etapa se inicia en Epernay, la capital de la región de Champagne, llena de viñedos que llegan hasta donde la vista alcanza. Epernay fue también comienzo de etapa en 1978 y 2002. El Tour continúa su marcha hacia el sur, traspasando dos puertos de categoría 4, antes de entrar en una etapa llana que pasará a 35 kms. al este de Paris.
El final de etapa es similar al del 2005, caundo Robbie McEwen ganó en la llegada a Montargis Steve
