La 8a. etapa es la primera de montaña en el Tour de este año, con final ascendente en Morzine-Avoriaz, conocida turísticamente como la puerta del sol.

La largada se encuentra en el punto final de la etapa 7, en la Estación des Rousses, descendiendo el Jura hacía el sur, para luego encaminarse rumbo al este, rodeando Lac Léman antes de continuar buscando la parte mas dificil del recorrido con dos puertos de primera categoría. El pelotón bordeará la frontera Franco-Suiza durante gran parte del día.

Morzine ha sido un destino popular para el Tour, ya que esta será la 18a. oportunidad en que lo recibirá. Seis veces ( 7 con esta) la carrera ha tenido llegada en la Estación de Sky de Avoriaz, a 1800 metros de altura, con 13.6 kms. en subida, a un promedio del 6,1%, durante los cuales se ascienden 800 metros desde la base.

Han pasado 16 años desde la última vez que se llegó en Avoriaz. El último tramo es similar en dificultad al final de la 15a. etapa del año pasado, en Verbier, donde Alberto Contador marcó 43 segundos de diferencia con su más inmediato perseguidor, encaramándose como claro lider de la carrera sobre su compañero de equipo Lance Armstrong, a quien venció allí por mas de un minuto y medio.—Steve
