Managed by Canada's most prolific cyclist, Steve Bauer, Planet Energy is the former R.A.C.E. continental team and features former national champion Keven Lacombe and 2007 8th place overall finisher Andrew Randell. The team is comprised of several former Symmetrics and Kelly Benefits riders also. Symmetrics raced in the past two Tours of Missouri. Planet Energy is a first time entrant to the event.
"Just as we have a commitment to top American teams, we have always tried to include a top North American-based continental team in this race to support the goals of the UCI," said Chris Aronhalt, managing partner of Medalist Sports, the tour's organizer. "Planet Energy is one of the top teams outside the U.S. in this hemisphere, and we are glad to reach an agreement to include them." For the first time since its inaugural year, the 2009 Tour will route east to west, starting in St. Louis and finishing in Kansas City. The past two years, the race routed west to east, starting in Kansas City and finishing in St. Louis.
The race will be contested over seven days and seven stages. There will be two circuit races (St. Louis, Kansas City), one individual time trial (Sedalia), and four point to point road races (Ste. Genevieve to Cape Girardeau; Farmington to Rolla; St. James to Jefferson City; Chillicothe to St. Joseph). The overall mileage for the course is expected to be more than 600 miles. Stage by stage courses will be announced Thursday, July 30, in Kansas City. Last year, the event drew more than 435,000 spectators over seven days. Missouri Tourism noted a direct and indirect economic impact of almost $30 million to the state.
The event is sanctioned by USA Cycling, the national federation for cycling in the United States, and the Union Cycliste Internationale, the international governing body for the sport of cycling.
January 27 update:
2009 Tour of Missouri Route: "The 2009 Tour of Missouri adds more difficult climbing, visits several new cities and features a new east-to-west route, starting in St. Louis and ending in Kansas City". I'll have to take the official word until the stage maps and profiles are released. Will more difficult road stages make up for changing the hilly Branson time trial to flat Sedalia? — Steve

August 4 update: All teams now announced for September race — tourofmissouri
June 23 update: 2008 Route Details And Maps Announced — tour of missouri
January 29 update: The official announcement doesn't take place until tomorrow morning (Wednesday) in Jefferson City, but here is the scoop on the 2008 Tour of Missouri route which now features seven stages making this year's bicycle race one day longer. Three stages (2, 3, 7) are almost identical to last year. The difficult, hilly Branson time-trial is back as is the circuit race in downtown St. Louis and the Clinton to Springfield road stage... the stage that saw George Hincapie escape in the last year's decisive break. I've included the profiles and maps for these three days in the stage summary table (see right) under the assumption they are mostly unchanged since the distances haven't changed. Kansas City, Lebanon, Jefferson City and St. Charles are also returning as host cities. New to this year's event are St. Joseph (the grand depart), Rolla (last year's first runner-up), St. James and Hermann (home of the largest winemaking business in the state). In total, the route is approximately 623 miles in length. In addition to finishing the event with a circuit race in St. Louis, four other stages are road races that end in circuits. Finishing circuits are good for the spectators, who get to see the cyclists pass by several times before the finish, but I know the racers and the officials don't like them; they can be confusing for everyone.
Overall, this is a saintly route that will get the blessing of Catholic cycling fans. — Steve
January 30 announcement update: During the rollout today, Governor Blunt said 360,000 people watched the 2007 event live spending $26 million locally. Many more watched it on TV and over the internet from 73 different countries. "Thanks to the largest sporting event ever held in Missouri... what you have is a whole bunch of people around the world who may never have heard of Missouri now do know," said Blunt. The cost to put on the event came in on budget; however, due to a shortfall in expected corporate sponsorship, the event is in the hole about $300,000. Read more in the 2007 Tour of Missouri Annual Report. Both last year's winner George Hincapie and his former Discovery Channel teammate, Levi Leipheimer, have stated they plan to return to this year's event with their new teams, Team High Road and Astana.
