Sam BENNETT (IRL/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP) post-race: “Coming into the race I didn’t know how my shape would be, because racing here is different from the UAE, here it’s full gas the entire day and today it was another test to see where the legs were. We were a bit blocked in the last kilometers and could come to the front only with two kilometers to go, which was thanks to Michael, who always stays calm and knows what he has to do. I was confident and I just waited for the right moment to go and all I can say is that I’m happy with the kick I had and my victory.”

“The team was again incredible and I am happy I could finish off their incredible job. The stage was stressful, as everybody was motivated and there was quite a fight for positioning, but I am glad that I could come on top. It’s been a great weekend for Deceuninck – Quick-Step and I’m delighted I could contribute to it. Now I will enjoy wearing this beautiful yellow jersey, it’s really special to have it”, said Sam, the first Irishman in 31 years to lead Paris-Nice

The winning margin

Team DSM coach Marc Reef: “It was really nice that we were able to bring that one home today, especially with how we rode in the final, it was great to see. The guys moved up really well on the uphill section where Tiesj did a good job and we still had four guys up front. We made the right decisions and were able to bring Cees into a good spot. Trek took over and Nils made some space for Cees, who went around the last corner in fourth position. It wasn’t an easy day today, and it split a few times, but we were always in a good position which was great to see. We were sitting well together the whole day which made it a bit easier for us in the final. All in all it was a really good day for us and a really nice victory for the team. We’ll take confidence from this going into the coming stages now.”

“It’s the best feeling there is,” smiled a jubilant Cees BOL (NED/DSM) at the finish. “I had a bit of a struggle at the start of the season and wasn’t too good until now but we kept believing and today I got superb help from my teammates. We smashed it. We went well through the last corner, and were close to being boxed in but Nils recognised the moment and kept the door open for me and from there I was in a good wheel. Trek did a good lead out but I started my sprint in the right moment and had enough power to make it to the line. It’s a good boost for the confidence after we didn’t do too well yesterday but today we showed what we’re capable of as a team. It gives us confidence for the next sprint stages but also for on other days where we’ve got chances with other guys in the team.”

First win in over a year and fifth pro win for Stage 2 winner, Cees BOL (TEAM DSM)

New race leader, Michael MATTHEWS (TEAM BIKEEXCHANGE): “I came here to try everything I could. With the breakaways not really going, it gave us opportunities to go for the intermediate sprints, take seconds back and take the jersey.

“I knew I wasn’t the fastest guy here so I tried to position well and sprint as best I could and, in the end, today I was third. There was time bonuses for the third place and so I got it and will get to wear it tomorrow in the time trial.

“It is nice that the hard work from the last two days pays off and I can pull on the yellow jersey for the team. The team were positioning me all day to make sure I could get up for all the intermediate sprint and also for the final sprint, so it is a really good day for us.

“To be wearing the jersey at least for one-day, I am really looking forward to that. It is amazing, everybody is fully committed to the plan and I am just trying to execute it as best I can and I will try my best with every opportunity, I get to pay them back.

“I haven’t done a time trial yet (this season), everything has been going well with my time trial training so hopefully I do a good TT tomorrow and continue with the jersey.”

The course suited me well today with all the short climbs. It was tough, but thanks to the team it worked out in the end. We controlled the race and at the end I still had enough energy in my legs to get away. It feels good that I’m now wearing yellow in Paris-Nice. The goal is to keep the lead until Nice. We’re not there yet, but the team is strong. I am looking forward to the next stages in which we want to maintain this flow."

Your Stage 5 winner, Sam BENNETT (IRL/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP): “I was disappointed after the second stage, so to bounce back and win what was the last sprinters’ stage makes me very happy. It’s fantastic that Deceuninck – Quick-Step got two wins today, I’m delighted for Julian and really proud of the Wolfpack spirit that the entire team displays no matter the race or the circumstances”, said Sam after becoming the active rider with the most stage wins at Paris-Nice.

Bennett, who after his 30th career victory in the World Tour returned in the green jersey, continued: “Big thanks to the entire team, I couldn’t have done it without them. They did again an incredible job, they were just perfect. That was an awesome lead-out and I’m super happy I could hold it to the line. Michael always gets me there and a lot of my results are down to him. When I’m on his wheel, I know that all I have to do is stay there and not panic. I did that again today and it feels great to get another win in this race I love so much.”

Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) retained the race leader’s yellow, but suffered a big fright when he crashed with 37 km to go in a pile-up which forced his team captain Tony Martin, the 2011 Paris-Nice winner, out of the race.

Lone break survivor, Gino MADER (BAHRAIN VICTORIOUS)

Lone break survivor, Gino MADER (BAHRAIN VICTORIOUS): Today was an absolutely awesome day for the team with Jack Haig moving up to 9th in the GC. We had Dylan and me in the breakaway, and from the beginning, I felt quite well, and I hoped to get relatively fresh to the final, and as soon as we hit the final slopes, it was just a 40-minute all-out effort, and unfortunately, Roglič caught me in the final and delegated me to second place, but I’m still super happy with my performance today, and proud to have done such a good job with all the team.”

Race leader Primož ROGLIČ (SLO/JUMBO-VISMA) wins his third stage: "I always want to win", Roglic said. "I saw an opportunity and I took it. It was a short, but tough stage. In the end it was very tight, but luckily I managed to take the win. The team controlled the stage well and luckily I was able to finish it off for them. Paris-Nice is a great race and I would like to add it to my palmares. But we are not there yet. I expect the necessary attacks tomorrow and we have to stay sharp and focused to bring the victory home."

After two crashes and one near crash, race leader Primož ROGLIČ (SLO/JUMBO-VISMA) crosses 56th + 3:08 dropping from 1st to 15th on GC on the last day

“It was the perfect way to finish and I couldn't be happier," said Magnus Cort at the finish. His teammate Jonas Rutsch also made several big moves in the breakaway throughout the stage. “Jonas had an incredible ride today and then Magnus could smell the victory. Those two were playing off each other,” said Neilson Powless.

"I’m happy about winning the general classification, however, I have some mixed feelings. All the events came thick and fast today: I had a mechanical ahead of the first climb and had to chase hard to get back on, and Primoz then crashed twice. We tried to wait for him, but when he went down for the second time, we had a strong leading group in front of us and were trying to fight for the stage win. Several teams were riding very hard out in front and we didn't want to lose our current position. It was just crazy today. I don't know if I can be too happy about the victory at the moment, because it's never the ideal way to win a race. Of course, our goal this year coming into the race was to defend our victory from last year, and now I'm standing here on the last day in the yellow jersey. That was a bit unexpected and I am still somewhat speechless. I have to say thanks again to the whole team, which worked so hard all week and supported me well to make this possible." - Maximilian Schachmann
