Italians 1-2: Filippo GANNA (ITA/INEOS GRENADIERS) and Edoardo AFFINI (ITA/JUMBO-VISMA)

Stage winner and Maglia Rosa Filippo Ganna said: “It's never easy to bounce back as a winner. There were some polemics - some said I wasn't going to be competitive. If I hadn't have worked in the gym and on the track before the Tour of Romandie, I might have won the ITT there but it's not possible to always win in a season that includes 60 to 70 days of racing with big goals like targeting the gold medal at the Olympics Games in the ITT and the team pursuit. The Maglia Rosa looks to me even pinker this year than last year. It was a victory I wanted more and this will boost my morale ahead of the 20 stages in which the great captains we have for the GC will be the priority.”

Stage 2:  Stupinigi → Novara, 173 km  Full Results and Report

Trofeo Senza Fine / The Endless Trophy at the Stage 2 start in Stupinigi (Nichelino)

5th today Peter SAGAN (SVK/BORA-HANSGROHE): “The stage was quite straightforward and it played out the way we were expecting, with a fast sprint finish. Up to the last kilometres, it was easy but in the finale, you had to be really focused as it could be messy. It was important to stay safe and avoid any crashes. I think the result reflects the field of sprinters in this Giro. I'd like to thank again my teammates for their work all day, I felt that my condition is getting better.”

All eyes were on the stage favorite, Caleb EWAN (AUS/LOTTO SOUDAL), who was a disappointing 10th today: “We came into the last two kilometres a little bit too far back and every time we tried to move up, there was some slight corner, so the bunch was always going from left to right. We were kind of blocked a lot of the time,” Ewan explained post-race. “In the crucial part in the last five hundred metres, we were just too far back and it was hard to sprint from the position I was in.”

2nd today Giacomo NIZZOLO (ITA/TEAM QHUBEKA ASSOS) showed us his cofid test form which he wore on his helmet throughout the stage

"W" salute. Tim Merlier post-race: "I paid tribute to Wouter Weylandt on the line. I knew him from the Schelde peloton. I knew he was a good sprinter. I was in a training camp in the Ardennes ten years ago at the time, it was a very emotional day. Today’s sprint was very hectic but the team brought me to the perfect position at the last roundabout. I've done nice sprints before but this one is my best victory so far."

Maglia Rosa Filippo Ganna said: “They've told me that a lot of people are getting into cycling because of me, if it's true, I'm pleased to hear that. Watching cycling doesn't cost a thing and it's great if new people are starting to ride because of it. Already last year in Siciily and on Etna, I heard so many people cheering for me from the side of the road. Maybe towards the end of last year they only recognised the Maglia Rosa, while this year they know me by name too. I don't think I am a superhero though! The superheroes are the people who were on the front line during lockdown.”

"I think we had the perfect strategy for today and the team worked very well to execute it. Once again, I'd like to thank all my teammates for their tremendous effort, they worked so hard to try our chance at the stage win. We did the best we could, just the way we do every day. We are a team that always races to win, not settle for second or third." – Peter Sagan

"Today we had a big chance for a stage win with Peter and we truly did the best we could towards that goal. Everybody gave their absolute maximum, from the start line to the finish line. However, we can't do everything on our own, you also need some collaboration from the rest of the peloton. All our guys put in a tremendous effort and fought for the victory, that's after all what we do. Peter was second in the group sprint, but that's not the point, we race to finish first not second or third." – Jan Valach, Sports Director

The emotions of almost leaving professional cycling to becoming a Giro d'Italia stage winner

Taco van der Hoorn post-race said: “I didn’t know there were only four seconds between myself and the peloton. Maybe that’s because I celebrated too much in the last 100 meters. I also felt the presence of the peloton but I looked back a few times and I could see they were quite far behind. I knew about the two sharp corners in the last kilometer but I didn’t know how sharp they were. It was a big goal for me to go in the breakaway today. I had planned that no breakaway would go without me. It wasn’t the plan to finish off like this but I had to take the small chance I had. This first victory of the year means a lot for my new team. We felt good behind the scenes and we came close at the Tour of Algarve. I’m happy the team gave me a nice program and some freedom after the two years I spent at Jumbo-Visma working for Wout van Aert in the classics or chasing breakaways down for Dylan Groenewegen."

Race leader by 16s, Filippo GANNA (ITA/INEOS GRENADIERS): “For sure I came to the Giro a little low on confidence after some defeats but I managed to make up for it in Turin. It became a personal goal of mine to retain the Maglia Rosa today. Anyone can think what they want but I’ll be at the disposal of the team tomorrow. I’ve seen Egan Bernal has been very motivated these past two days. I hope the Maglia Rosa will stay with us but if it goes to another team tomorrow we’ll race in a more passive way. Remco Evenepoel has impressed me climbing on a big gear today, I don’t know where he found the energy to do that, hats off to him.”

Stage winner, Joseph Dombrowski said: "There are ups and downs in a cycling career, good and difficult moments. I feel like today was a good day for me. This is a nice way to start the Giro. Normally I always feel my best during the last week in the mountains. On paper today it was not the stage that suited me the most, but I have to take my opportunities when they are there. We had a good group and a good gap. I knew some guys were closer to the Maglia Rosa than me. I tried to take advantage of that. It’s hard to say that I’m disappointed to miss out on the Maglia Rosa after winning a stage. Maybe there will be an opportunity to take the lead later on but we also have other goals in the team with Fernando Gaviria and Diego Ulissi for the stage wins and Davide Formolo on GC."

New race leader, Alessandro DE MARCHI (ITA/ISRAEL START-UP NATION)

Alessandro DE MARCHI (ITA/ISRAEL START-UP NATION): “With my way of racing, many attacks haven't paid off in the past but I don’t think that I have made mistakes in the eleven years of my career. At the end of the day, it’s important to never give up. The Maglia Rosa is what all kids dream of. I never really thought I’d get it as I was never anywhere near close to it before. I don’t know exactly why but I started thinking about it two days ago and it happened today. I understood from the first few kilometers that it would be a big battle and not an easy breakaway of three or four riders. It was the right situation that could create opportunities and that’s how things went as planned. Beyond the Maglia Rosa, it’s even more gratifying to hear that many people are happy with what you have done.”

Caleb EWAN (AUS/LOTTO SOUDAL) gets his first Giro win this year and 4th career win

4th Peter SAGAN (SVK/BORA-HANSGROHE): "As expected, it was a day for the pure sprinters with quite technical and tricky final kilometres. The team did again an excellent job, Felix and Daniel were brilliant in the last kilometre. I was in a good position and had a strong pace when I was getting ready for the final push but the rider in front of me slowed down, so I didn't have the best speed in the final meters." – Peter Sagan

"Today was a textbook stage for sprinters, so it was clear that all the teams with such a goal would also work to ensure we had a bunch sprint finish. There were very strong crosswinds around the middle of the stage but that didn't affect the race, so in the end, all was set for a fast finish in the final and tricky part on the coast. Our focus was Peter, so the team was there to support him but also make sure that Emu stayed safe, avoided any crashes or loss of time. Peter was in an excellent position in the final kilometre, Felix and Daniel did a great job in positioning him. He was in third place when he was about to launch his sprint but slowed down a bit and took fourth on the line." – Jan Valach, Sports Director

This is the 11th time Giacomo NIZZOLO (ITA/TEAM QHUBEKA ASSOS) has finished second at the Giro

Caleb Ewan said: "The sprint itself was reasonably straight forward. It was slightly uphill in the last few 100 meters. I went to the right side and got boxed in. I moved a bit to the left and I had enough time to come around in the end. I tried to take the line with the least wind possible. The first half of the stage was super easy but the last half was stressful with potential crosswinds. We did a good job to stay near the front and out of trouble. Winning like I did today was obviously my first goal of the three Grand Tours. It’s still too early to leave the Giro. I’ll definitely be here tomorrow and I’ll try to win more stages."

Yesterday's winner, Joe DOMBROWSKI (USA/UAE TEAM EMIRATES) crashed but finished. From the team's press release: With 4.5km to go Dombrowski was involved in a collision with several other riders including Mikel Landa (Bahrain-Victorious) while approaching a traffic calming as the pace increased on the run-in to the line. Though Landa was forced out of the race, thankfully the American managed the re-mount his bike and finish the stage. Shortly after crossing the line, Dombrowski was taken to hospital afterwards as a precaution to be examined for any further injury.

Post race interviews

Maglia Rosa Alessandro De Marchi said: “It was an unforgettable evening for everyone in the team yesterday after I took the Maglia Rosa. In addition to the messages on my phone, the compliments I received today from staff, riders and everyone involved in the Giro d’Italia this morning really meant a lot to me. It’s pretty simple tomorrow: I’ll fight until the end. I’ll pay attention to make sure no one dangerous in the GC gets away. I’m ready to do my best. Wearing the Maglia Rosa is demanding but it’s a light weight to carry considering how nice it is to bear these responsibilities.”

Your Stage 5 winner, Caleb EWAN (AUS/LOTTO SOUDAL): “There was quite some pressure on myself and the team to get a good result today, so this win kind of feels like a relief. I wanted it so badly and to finish off the superb teamwork really is a great feeling. In my mission to win a stage in every Grand Tour this year, I can now tick off a stage at the Giro. But of course, I’m always hungry for more. This gives me and the whole team a confidence boost for the stages to come.”

Your Stage 5 winner, Caleb EWAN (AUS/LOTTO SOUDAL)

The Maglia Rosa Alessandro DE MARCHI (ITA/ISRAEL START-UP NATION) now leads the race by 42s

New Maglia Ciclamino Giacomo NIZZOLO (ITA/TEAM QHUBEKA ASSOS): “Today the final was quite technical and I think I did a good sprint but yet again came up again against somebody just stronger than me on the day, hopefully the victory will come the next time.

As a team we did great today, we had a good plan, and we tried to make it happen. In the finale I asked the guys just to stay around me as I knew that in the corners I could take care of myself and everybody did exactly what I asked. I'm really proud of them and with this attitude we can really look forward to the next sprint. This sort of result speaks to the teamwork in our camp and the great spirit we have in wanting to fight for one another.

I want to thank all of the fans of the team for their support. I really hope to give them a stage victory the next time.”

Obviously, not having to protect Mikel anymore, we had to race aggressively and go for breakaways. Matej [Mohoric] did an incredible job. He believed in me and he said yesterday that this would be the stage for me to win. I’m really happy to finish a win off like this. I actually do not know much about Gino Bartali. My parents have both always been cyclists, I’m just honoured to have the same name but I’m still far away from Bartali’s achievements and I’ll probably never reach his level. For me, the Giro has always been the most beautiful race in the world. It’s the race I always dreamt of being part of. To be a stage winner is even better."

The closer I stayed nearing the finish, the more I believed I’d wear the Maglia Rosa. I was fighting my life for this jersey. I’m super happy it happened. I have good legs these days, I’m already happy with what we have achieved here but I wouldn’t be surprised if there are other surprises later on. I'm hoping to 'do an Almeida' and keep the lead for a long time. It gives me a lot of confidence. In the future I want to come back to win the Maglia Rosa on the last day. I was in a good position for the sprint finish but a rider in front of me closed me into the barriers and there was little I could do." – 14th Peter Sagan

Another angle on the finish scene

Speaking at the press conference, the stage winner Caleb Ewan said: "It was not easier than expected, I’d rather say it was maybe harder than expected, as we needed a full lead out until the corner with 1km to go and it went full gas from that hill. It was a hard one to win. My victory has a lot to do with the work of my teammates. Being a leader isn’t natural for me, I didn’t have any mentors to achieve the role, it came from losing races. I’m a little bit demanding sometimes but I don’t want to be the guy who makes the others uncomfortable when they come to a race."

Race leader Attila VALTER (HUN/GROUPAMA-FDJ) after his first day in the Maglia Rosa: “Mostly, today, I enjoyed myself. I was lucky with the weather and the wind. I’m happy it was not a nervous stage. I heard people shouting my name or 'Maglia Rosa'. It’s been an incredible reaction from Hungary, more than I could expect. Many non-cycling media wrote about me getting the Maglia Rosa, so people can start to learn about cycling in my country. Yesterday, I didn’t load the race data on my computer but it went well anyway. Tomorrow I’ll listen carefully to what the course is like but the most important thing is that my mind goes well, rather than stressing about the route. It’ll be more demanding tomorrow than today. I think I just need a good sleep to have good legs.”

Speaking at the press conference, the stage winner Victor Lafay said: "All day in the breakaway, it was about recovering before the climb. With 25km to go, attacks began and I had to be careful of Nelson Oliveira and the others. I had to make sure they wouldn’t go too far. I managed that very well. With 3km to go, it was the right time to isolate myself at the front. Yesterday I was working for Elia Viviani. He’s our leader. I believe he can win a stage. He takes the pressure off the team and we won today because he has let us do what we want in the stages with climbs."

Race leader, Attila VALTER (HUN/GROUPAMA-FDJ): “Early in today’s stage, I found myself in a second group when the peloton split in two. It was my mistake but I remained relaxed because riders like Bardet and Nibali were around me and it was super far away from the finish. Coming a bit late to road cycling, positioning is still something I have to learn but wearing the Maglia Rosa helps a lot. This jersey is my responsibility now. Egan Bernal is doing very well in that sense. He’s never outside of the top 10 in the bunch. I hope tomorrow I’ll be doing even better in terms of riding at the front. I have the motivation to retain the Maglia Rosa. With a gravel section, the profile of the stage could make it a good one for me.”

The finish scene in Foligno

Peter Sagan said: "I’m very happy and I'd like to thank the whole team, they did some wonderful work on the last two climbs. They kept the race under control. Maciej Bodnar and Daniel Oss positioned me in the last curve so I could sprint for the win. With the stage victory, the Maglia Ciclamino arrived but it won’t be easy to keep it. We have only done half of the Giro and the hardest half awaits us. In any case, I’m happy to ride the Giro again. I feel like the last Giro was one month ago. I like racing in Italy."

"Today was a very good day for the team. Big thanks to my teammates for their fantastic effort. We gave our best, everybody worked hard to make it a tough stage. We managed to drop some of the pure sprinters but still, in the finale a few of them were there. When the pace is strong all day, it is easier. In the first stages of this Giro, I had the legs every day, but if the first 150km are easy, it is more difficult for me to beat the pure sprinters if the action is limited to the last 30km. I now have the ciclamino jersey as well but the Giro is still long, we are only halfway through. We'll see day by day what we can achieve." – Peter Sagan

Daniel Oss (ITA - Bora - Hansgrohe)

"We knew we had a chance in winning today, it was a stage for sprinters but it was unlike the previous ones because it was short and right before the rest day. So, it could be a difficult one to control. Our first goal was to make sure the breakaway group was small and this was achieved. We were aware we would have to pull in the peloton, together with the other sprinters’ teams. So, we were 4-5 teams working in front but we realised they just wanted to keep everything tight and finish in a bunch sprint. On the contrary, we wanted to make it a hard race, especially in the climbs, so that we either drop a few sprinters or we get to the finish in a reduced group. This is what we did and every single one of our riders put in a tremendous effort, they worked perfectly until the final kilometre where Peter took over and finished off with a great sprint. It's a nice victory for us!" – Jan Valach, Sports Director

Maglia Rosa Egan Bernal said: “For sure, Vincenzo Nibali is a rider with great experience. He can make you win or lose a Giro. Following him in a downhill means risking a crash. I knew there were 4km after the last downhill and I still had teammates with me so I didn’t worry. Nibali took a little advantage and we always have to pay attention to him. Tomorrow it’s a flat stage. It looks quiet on paper but it’s also possible to lose a stage of the Giro there, so I’ll wait for tomorrow’s stage to be complete before I think of the Zoncolan. I have never climbed the Zoncolan before. Everyone says it’s extremely hard, especially the last 3km.”

After 11 second places in Giro d’Italia sprints, Giacomo Nizzolo (Qhubeka Assos) finally wins a stage

Giacomo Nizzolo said: "I confirm that this win gives a lot of meaning to my career. For sure, looking back at the stage to Turin [in 2016], I felt it belonged to me but the judges decided otherwise. On several occasions I thought I could have won and I made mistakes but I knew I had the potential to win at the Giro d’Italia as well as elsewhere. Today it wasn’t the most suitable finish for me. I prefer the technical finales. Edoardo Affini was my point of reference for this 3km straight line at the finish. As he moved to the right side, I reacted. I took the risk of losing in order to win."

A popular win needless to say by Giacomo NIZZOLO (ITA/TEAM QHUBEKA ASSOS)

Your Stage 13 winner, Giacomo NIZZOLO (ITA/TEAM QHUBEKA ASSOS) who now no longer holds the record for the most top 3 Giro stage finishes without ever winning (16)

The Maglia Rosa Egan Bernal said: “It would have been better to stay in bed in terms of recovering from previous stages but I recovered a bit today as it was a quiet day. Everyone wanted this kind of a stage scenario today. In my opinion, the Giro still has a long way to go. I have a little bit of an advantage but everything can happen in this race. It’s necessary to keep my feet on the ground. I have to stay calm to not lose the top spot. I just know about the Monte Zoncolan that anyone who’s got the legs can make a difference in the last 3km.”

They’re extremely happy. I'd also like to thank the whole staff of Eolo-Kometa. That includes Ivan Basso and Alberto Contador who have won everything - Ivan won here atop the Zoncolan. This morning, he told me: you make you the break, you attack on the Zoncolan and you win. So I did. But he believed in me more than I did! From today on, we’ll grow and progress, the team as much as myself. I'd never ridden the Zoncolan before but I've always seen it as an iconic climb. It’s wonderful to win here."

Your Stage 14 winner, Lorenzo FORTUNATO (ITA/EOLO-KOMETA CYCLING TEAM): First pro victory for Lorenzo Fortunato and first international win since his time in the junior ranks. Hailing from Bologna, he’s the first rider from the Emilia-Romagna region to win a stage at the Giro since Manuel Belletti, who did so on home soil at Cesenatico in 2010. He’s the first rider named Fortunato to win a stage at the Giro d’Italia.

The Maglia Rosa Egan Bernal said: “For sure, Astana wanted to win the stage. They even asked us if we wanted that too but we answered that we’d be happy if the breakaway were to stay ahead. They did a nice stage and they pulled very hard. The downhill was very technical and there were very few riders left at the front. Astana did well trying to win the stage and having faith in [Aleksandr] Vlasov. I always said I had more rivals than the guy in second place behind me. It was Remco [Evenepoel], then Vlasov and now it’s Simon Yates. I expected Yates to do so something today. It was a very good stage for him. He looked strong. I’m sure he’ll remain one of the strongest. I’m happy I managed to follow him today.”

Victor CAMPENAERTS (BEL/TEAM QHUBEKA ASSOS) wins his first Grand Tour stage: "The finale was crazy but for me the start of the race was more important. We already had a super atmosphere in the team with two stage victories but we remained dedicated to make something beautiful out of the rest of the race. We split the bunch from the start. Our team had the most riders in the breakaway and they had faith in me so I was happy to finish it off. Three victories is a really great achievement. Before this season, I already explained my different approach as a road cyclist. It has become difficult for me to get results in time trials because of the performances of Filippo Ganna but also Remco [Evenepoel] and Wout [van Aert] who are both favourites for medals at the Olympics and I hope they'll deliver for Belgium. This is my first Grand Tour stage win. It never worked out in time trials but I finally have it as a road rider. It's not only my victory today though - it's really a team effort and I hope it'll help to attract sponsors because we need it to survive as a team that also rides for a great cause. We contribute towards making people's lives better thanks to bikes."

Victor CAMPENAERTS (BEL/TEAM QHUBEKA ASSOS)

Your Stage 15 winner, Victor CAMPENAERTS (BEL/TEAM QHUBEKA ASSOS)

Victor(y)

Victor CAMPENAERTS (BEL/TEAM QHUBEKA ASSOS): I've been chasing a WorldTour, and specifically a Grand Tour, stage win for so long; having been four times second, twice third, once fifth, and I've always targeted victories in time trials. I've come so close but I decided to change how I race and focus more aggressively on racing on the road bike, and focusing a little less focus on the TT.

I am at my first Grand Tour with another objective and we've already had two victories with the team here. I can't say that I helped Mauro that much in the break for his win but I helped Nizzolo for his victory and now I helped myself to a big victory - what a day! I had big, big help from the whole team especially Max and Wizzy, who were also in the break with me.

For two years we've speaking about Ubuntu in the team - I am because we are - which is about riding as a team. We cannot go alone, we're stronger as a team together, and the spirit we have in the Giro is building up to an even greater spirit. Our mission as a team is to change lives with bicycles and the Qhubeka Charity, these successes mean that we play our part in changing the world.

I also hope that these victories is great exposure for the team, to keep the team alive for the future. It hasn't been easy to keep it alive and we needed this, so I am just so happy.

Maglia Rosa Egan Bernal said: "I think it was an easy day for us behind. It was windy and also rainy in the finale but it was okay. I remained focused. Tomorrow it will for sure be a decisive stage. I heard it will be cold so I'll use gloves and all the necessary clothes to be ready for the fight in the mountains. It'll be a long stage and another hard one for my teammates but I think we're ready for it, mentally as well as physically."

Simon YATES (GBR/TEAM BIKEEXCHANGE) wins Stage 19: "I'm really happy. The team did a fantastic job today. We controlled the start, rode well behind and then I finished it off. I saw the boys from Ineos were just happy to ride at tempo behind so I had a feeling they would let me go today. It was not the most difficult stage. It'll be different tomorrow at a higher altitude. I don't have any regrets for the way I rode on the first week, I had some little problems and I think I managed everything the best I could. The gap to the Maglia Rosa is still quite important but I am closer to Caruso now who is in second place."

Race leader by 2:29, Egan BERNAL (COL/INEOS GRENADIERS):“For me, the most important thing is to have the Maglia Rosa in Milan. When I have the legs, I like to attack. But now there's one rider stronger than me and it's Simon Yates. I want to keep the time I gained earlier in the Giro because that's the fruits of great team work so I don't want to make any mistakes that could ruin everything. Today I took one step further towards that final win. It was an important day for us after what happened two days ago. Now I'm confident ahead of tomorrow's stage, which I'll enjoy riding at a higher altitude. I want to arrive at the ITT with some extra energy."

Damiano CARUSO (ITA/BAHRAIN VICTORIOUS): "My move wasn’t planned at all. Sometimes the best things happen by coincidence. A bit of luck is needed as well and in this case, there was a bit of intelligence too. We reacted after DSM’s attack and it was a winning choice. I raced to win because in this profession, you have to try and win. Like Alberto Bettiol, I wanted to win as a tribute to our late agent Mauro Battaglini. I also dedicate this victory to my family, my wife and my kids. Tomorrow I’ll give it all from the recon to the race. I won’t make any calculations. It’ll be a triumphant closing day."

Maglia Rosa Egan Bernal said: “I went through the most challenging moment of my Giro so far on the San Bernardino Pass when Damiano Caruso made his move. I’m happy for him. He came here as a super domestique and he’s racing as a leader for the podium. He has ridden a perfect Giro so far. I hope to be with him on the podium tomorrow but with myself in first place and him second. It’s a 30km time trial so it’s certainly not my specialty. It doesn’t matter if I win by two minutes or one second. The most important thing is to have my name on the trophy.”

Runner-up Damiano CARUSO (ITA/BAHRAIN VICTORIOUS) has a lot to celebrate too

Your Stage 21 winner, Filippo GANNA (ITA/INEOS GRENADIERS): "With the puncture, we spiced up the race! Thanks to the team though, I got a fast bike change. It’s the icing on the cake to bring this second time trial win at home along with Egan’s Maglia Rosa. Three weeks of racing bring a lot of suffering but when your captain raises their arms up in the air on the last day, it already makes you look forward to 2022. As a domestique, it’s our second win out of two Grand Tours after last year’s Giro, it’s a similar achievement to Gianni Moscon who has five out of five. Last year, Tao [Geoghegan Hart] took the Maglia Rosa on the last day whereas this time, Egan took it early so we had to work much more at the front of the peloton. Having said that, I’ve also enjoyed sharing the moment with many more fans on the road side than last year. It’s been a wonderful three weeks."

Lets get this party started

Runner up Damiano Caruso said: “It’s my first time on the podium of a Grand Tour and it is a beautiful feeling. This podium may not have been foreseeable at the start because we had other plans, but day after day the awareness dawned on me that I might be able to do something big, and today I’m here celebrating this podium. Today, it was only right to prepare to ride the stage and finish it to the best of my abilities and with complete commitment, as I have all the way through the past three weeks. I wanted to do well. I didn’t think of the gap, I just thought about pushing as hard as I could, and now I’ll celebrate. We’ll see what comes next. We’ll enjoy this moment and then think about the future.”

Points winner, Peter Sagan (SVK/Bora - Hansgrohe) and his son Marlon: "It was my first time with the Maglia Ciclamino on the podium in the front of the Duomo. It is a very nice feeling and it’s beautiful here. I’m very happy to finish my second Giro. I took this jersey, the Ciclamino, and it’s amazing for me. It was something missing in my collection. My son arrived here and he wanted to go on the podium. I’m very happy that I can make him happy on the podium. I have no words, thank you.”

INEOS GRENADIERS have a lot to celebrate

The winning team

Maglia Rosa and overall winner Egan Bernal said: “Winning the Giro puts me in a wonderful situation. I’m quiet but inside, I feel an explosion of happiness. Nowadays I’m riding at an excellent level that enabled me to win the Giro but I have to keep my feet on the ground. There are other riders who are also very strong. Thanks to them I’ll find some fresh motivation for the future. The most difficult moment of the Giro was yesterday when Caruso rode away. I had five teammates around me but suddenly they were down to just three. Luckily Jonathan Castroviejo made the right decisions at the right time. The most beautiful moment of the race came from riding strongly on the gravelled roads to Montalcino. Today, listening to the voice of my coach [Mikel Artetxe] during the time trial was another beautiful moment. I’ll remember it in the years to come. My team manager Dave Brailsford also has played a big part in this victory. I went through difficult times after I won the Tour de France. With this Giro, I have again found what I was aiming for.”

Two Grand Tours at only 24 years old. Thanks for tuning in.
