Stage 1 winner Primož ROGLIČ (SLO/JUMBO - VISMA): “This is a fantastic start”, a happy Roglic said. “I am very happy with this victory. The team has shown that we are very strong. They did a perfect job throughout the stage. It is great that I can reward them for their efforts with this stage victory. We went full gas on the final climb. Sepp rode really fast. I will wear this leader’s jersey with great pride again. Hopefully we can provide the people at home even more spectacle. In any case, I’m going to enjoy this Vuelta. Day by day, we definitely have to do that this season.”

KOM leader, Sepp Kuss for domestique work: “We knew the climb would be very steep and difficult. It was suitable for attacks, so we attacked. It was nice to see that Primoz could finish it in this way. Defending the red jersey is our number one priority for now. The Vuelta is the best race of the year for me.”

Marc SOLER (ESP/MOVISTAR) wins Stage 2 after attacking solo over the final climb

Marc SOLER (ESP/MOVISTAR) wins by 19s

Marc SOLER (ESP/MOVISTAR): "I'm so happy with this victory. We were racing at home, we were so motivated to be riding in Navarra, next to the team's headquarters, and together with our sports directors, we had already planned before the start we wanted to give it a try from the top of Urbasa. We started pulling there and everything simply went perfect from that moment on. Arcas, Imanol, Nelson and Rojillas always kept the pace high on the flat, then Carlos put on a really good performance from the bottom of the climb, and I tried to pick it up from that. I struggled a bit into the final meters of the climb because I had worked so hard, but as I saw that they were slowing down into the descent and I was coming back, I took advantage from the fact that I was maybe at 2x speed from them, I tried to pass them without anyone getting to my wheel - and I went on to the finish. We were so excited and willing to do well here - we actually did a recon of this very stage in the weekend, just before travelling to Irún. It's my first ever victory in a Grand Tour and I'm so, so happy. This team already deserved some reward after so many efforts and such a difficult season. I can only thank the team for their support and everyone who has been by my side in these months."

After doing some work at the front of the final climb, Chris Froome dropped of the back again today

Your Stage 3 winner, Daniel MARTIN (IRL/ISRAEL START - UP NATION): “It was a tough day to start a grand tour, and you can see that with the gaps in the finish. The team did a great job of protecting me all day, and I had perfect legs. There was a pretty strong headwind on the last climb, so it was a game of cat and mouse. Primoz was just too strong in the end when he attacked, but I’m happy to be in the fight, and I hope the good legs stay with me so we can fight for a stage in the next days.”

After his 2nd place finish, race leader Primož ROGLIČ (SLO/JUMBO - VISMA) extended his lead to 5s: “This is another great result”, Roglic said. “It was a difficult and nervous stage due to the wind. The team did a fantastic job of keeping control and always keeping me in a good position. Movistar rode very fast on the climb, but Sepp and George managed that well. Even when Carapaz attacked. So far, things are going well for us and hopefully we can maintain this flow. The Vuelta is still long and I definitely expect a tough battle with Carapaz and the Movistar guys, among others. I think today was fun to watch.”

Sam BENNETT (IRL/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP) post-race: “It was so fast in the run-in, and actually, it was fast all day and I was a bit nervous, got to admit that. We said we needed to come together at one point and the team did the job perfectly. They came together when we needed to and even more than we asked to be. We only asked a few guys to be there and the whole team was there.”

“I went for the outside and Philipsen came up the inside and got such a jump I actually didn’t think I was going to be able to catch him. But in the end, I started getting more and more speed and I was still accelerating to the line. I had the power but he was so explosive out of the corner and I didn’t know if I would catch him. But I found the speed I needed, and in the end, I managed to overtake him and take my first win since Champs-Élysées, which feels amazing”, a delighted Sam explained after picking up Deceuninck – Quick-Step’s 39th victory of the year.

Your Stage 5 winner, Tim WELLENS (BEL/LOTTO SOUDAL): "At the start of La Vuelta it was the goal of the team to win one stage”, commented aggressive rider Tim Wellens, who went in the break already for the third time in this Vuelta . “It is super nice that it comes so early in the stage race. So now the next two weeks we can ride without stress. This morning I already had a plan to join the breakaway. The start was super difficult. We went full gas for two hours. Then I was lucky enough to be in the first group. The cooperation was difficult since we had two riders with a good GC classification present. Then we attacked with three riders and the cooperation was much better. We were all three at the same level. I could finish it off on the steep finish."

2nd local boy Omar FRAILE MATARRANZ (ESP/ASTANA PRO) + 4s, 3rd Alejandro VALVERDE (ESP/MOVISTAR)

Your Stage 7 winner, Michael WOODS (CAN/EF PRO CYCLING): That was a special day, it’s always amazing racing in the Basque Country. I got away with those four other guys and they were riding super strong. I felt bad that I couldn’t pull through, but with Valverde, I just couldn’t pull through because we had Hugh Carthy in the peloton and we didn’t want to give him any more time in the classification. So, I was able to sit in a bit and then I had a bit of luck, I had the legs and I just took the win.

I had penciled in this stage a bit, but initially I wasn’t meant to get in the breakaway I was meant to be with Hugh, however the race just got so crazy and the group got so big I had to go across to make sure we had numbers in it and it paid off great for me.

I’m going to savor this stage win and after that I’ll start looking at the race book after.

Sam BENNETT (IRL/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP) post-race after his unnecessary aggressive actions cost him the win.

The guys supported me throughout the stage and so I still had good legs at the finish. In the finale I was headbutted by Sam and I finished second. The jury then relegated him after an objection. It's not exactly the way I wanted to win, but I think the decision was right. We still have a long way to go to Madrid, there are a couple more chances for the fast men, so I hope we can be successful there."

“It’s always nice to win”, Roglic said. “I never get used to winning. The legs felt really good today and I am very happy with this victory. The team has put me in a good position and this victory is also for them. I am now a year older and a year stronger. It’s like a good wine. The older the better. The fact that I have the red jersey again doesn’t change much for us as a team. We must try to keep the momentum and most of all we need to stay focused and stick to our own plan. I found that surprising, because I thought I would suffer a lot more. Many people thought that I would take much time very easily, but in the end everyone starts such a time trial with equal opportunities. We all know that it is just full house and that is not always fun. Fortunately I had good legs today and I was able to do a nice time trial. We have to stay focused now and keep fighting to the end.”

Magnus CORT NIELSEN (DEN/EF PRO CYCLING) post-race: "I think I timed my sprint pretty well, I came from the last corner in a decent position, not too far away from the front. Then I sat there looking for an opening, and I found that with about 200m to go, maybe a little less, and from there I went with everything that I had."

"I was never confident that I could win it. Starting today I hadn’t even thought about winning this stage. I thought it would be a more reduced bunch coming in, and I was helping Hugh out, and suddenly I could see my chance to get over the first cat climb with about 25 to 35km to go, and although it wasn’t that much of a reduced group I knew there weren’t many guys faster than me. There was still Cavagna out front, but there were a lot of teams wanting it to come back together. "

Your Stage 16 winner, Magnus CORT NIELSEN (DEN/EF PRO CYCLING): I think the last nine months have been difficult for everyone this year, it means a lot coming back and winning [since my last win nine months ago to the date]. I was coming into good form when we came back after the long break, but then I caught the coronavirus myself and I was out. So I have only been training for three weeks before coming here to this race, and it’s really nice to get the victory here.

Pascal ACKERMANN (GER/BORA - HANSGROHE): "I am so happy that I was able to take the win today. But this result was only possible thanks to the support of my teammates, who did an extraordinary job, particularly over the last 3 km. We never had an easy stage here at the Vuelta. There was always a hard fight for the breakaway group and then on stages like yesterday, the sprinters had to suffer quite a lot. It was just important to save as much energy as possible and I'm glad that I was able to do that, and today it paid off. At first, we held back a bit in the decisive phase, because we knew that we had a strong sprint train. Then over the last 10 km we went full throttle and were able to take the victory. Many thanks to the whole team!"

Lisa Brennauer (Ceratizit-WNT) won the Madrid Challenge by La Vuelta

Super combative rider, Rémi Cavagna, (Deceuninck – Quick-Step): “This award is very special and makes me extremely proud. I didn’t win a stage, but I was six times in a breakaway, always trying to make the race more spectacular. I like being in a breakaway and I was happy every time I found myself at the front in the past couple of weeks. It’s not a question of planning, more a question of feeling, I just like to attack and improvise once I am in the lead. I know I can’t win sprints, so I always try to do something crazy, something that people will remember, like I did in Ardèche, in the beginning of the year. That is why being on the podium here and getting this trophy is so special”, a delighted Rémi said.
