Wow! I'm still a little bit speechless about this victory. All the big sprinter names are present and coming here I wasn’t sure I had the shape to win. The last kilometres were a bit chaotic, but when I saw a gap opening in front of me with 300 metres to go, I just went for it. It was a very long sprint and I'm really happy that I could start the UAE Tour 2020 with such a big result. I want to thank my teammates who brought me to a very good position in the finale. We can now take it a bit easier, but we will, of course, try our best to win more stages.” – Pascal Ackermann

“It was a really tough finish”, said Caleb Ewan. “We thought that it might be a little bit harder than last year as the profile looked to be harder, but there was no wind, it was pretty straightforward. The last climbs were really hard of course, but my team did just a great job to drop me off in that final corner, and in the best position possible. I have to thank them for this victory.”

“I could have gone from the bottom as well, as Sam Bennett did, but I knew that it’s better to wait a few seconds because it is in that last twenty meters that you can really win a race and that’s what I did. I’ve waited for those last 20 or 30 meters because if you blow there, you can lose so much time. I knew how long I could go for, I timed my sprint really well and I could accelerate all the way to the line.”

The stage winner and Red Jersey Caleb Ewan said: “I knew from last year that you can see the finish from the bottom of the climb to Hatta Dam and it doesn’t look so far but it’s very hard and we don’t go so fast up that hill. I made sure that I kept the energy I needed for the last 50 metres. After the successful season I had last year I really wanted to start this season well and keep the momentum. This year’s start is better than last year’s. Milan-Sanremo is the race I’ve really been aiming for at the start of every season in the past few years. Nothing changes here. It’s my big goal for the first part of 2020. This year we’ll have an even better team than last year and we have a second option with Philippe Gilbert if the race is hard.”

Adam YATES (GBR/MITCHELTON - SCOTT) post-race: “I just went solo to test the legs and see who’d come with me to take conclusions from there. I felt super and no one came with me. I went full gas at the front and it worked out well even though it was very hot for me today, around 37° for most of the race. It’s my first race of the year so I didn’t know how I’d feel and who’d be up against me, especially with the young guys coming up. I still feel young but I get older every year. Now I just have to stay on my toes to try and win the race overall.”

Stage 4 finish scene

Your Stage 4 winner, Dylan GROENEWEGEN (NED/JUMBO - VISMA): “This is a very good win. I am very pleased”, Groenewegen said. “I beat the world’s best sprinters today. This is a really sweet victory. In the first stage I probably had the fastest sprint of all, but I was not well positioned. That meant I had to come from too far. Today it was a totally different sprint. The boys did a perfect lead-out. It was a hectic final, but everyone really had his share in my stage win. They all went flat-out. We decided to move up to the front in the last three kilometres because of the strong headwind. Christoph (Pfingsten) has the eye to put me in the best position for the sprint. Then I perfectly timed my sprint. I am happy that I was able to finish off the team’s work.”

Race leader Adam YATES (GBR/MITCHELTON - SCOTT) and H.H. Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Sports Council

The Red Jersey leader of the GC Adam Yates said: “Apart from a bit of a fright when I avoided a crash, I had a good day on the bike. We rode at the end for our young sprinter Kaden Groves (6th). I hope to have the same legs tomorrow as yesterday.”

Premature victory salute: Tadej POGAČAR (SLO/UAE TEAM EMIRATES) pips Alexey LUTSENKO (KAZ/ASTANA PRO) while race leader and winner of the same finish two days ago, Adam YATES (GBR/MITCHELTON - SCOTT), was 3rd

Your Stage 5 winner, Tadej POGAČAR (SLO/UAE TEAM EMIRATES): “This is like a home race for my team and for me as well since I realized some fans had come from Slovenia to support me here. The dramatic finale makes it an amazing victory. I had to throw my bike on the line to beat [Alexey] Lutsenko. I’m super happy with winning here up Jebel Hafeet.”

The Red Jersey leader of the GC Adam Yates said: “I felt good. For sure two days ago I got a big advantage but today all I did was stay with other key guys and out of trouble. That’s what it is. It’s all good. For sure I don’t want to lose the lead of this race any time soon. The next two stages are fairly flat but we’ll have to pay attention to the wind. Today it was windy and there were a lot of nervous guys, so we’ll just have to keep calm. Hopefully in two days’ time I’ll be here again to comment on the overall victory. It would be nice to get the first win in the first race of the season. I’ve been training well and the condition is there, so I wanna try and win the UAE Tour.”
