Nice not nice... many opening day crashes

Tony Martin tempered the opening day recklessness of the peloton

After a chaotic crash marred opening stage, the sprint finish back in Nice

Alexander KRISTOFF (NOR/UAE TEAM EMIRATES) wins the opening stage in 3:46:23 ahead of 2 Mads PEDERSEN (DEN/TREK - SEGAFREDO), 3 Cees BOL (NED/SUNWEB), 4 Sam BENNETT (IRL/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP), 5 Peter SAGAN (SVK/BORA - HANSGROHE), 6 Elia VIVIANI (ITA/COFIDIS), 7 Giacomo NIZZOLO (ITA/NTT PRO CYCLING), 8 Pierre ROLLAND (FRA/B&B HOTELS - VITAL CONCEPT P / B KTM), 9 Anthony TURGIS (FRA/TOTAL DIRECT ENERGIE), 10 Jasper STUYVEN (BEL/TREK - SEGAFREDO)

Kristoff knows how to win a hard man's finish

Thibaut PINOT was involved in the late stage crash with 3 km to go but loses no time... just a little skin

Rafael VALLS wasn't so lucky and was carted off with a fractured femur

Alexander Kristoff: “It’s a dream to wear the yellow jersey, I don’t think you can ask for anything better. The team came here to aim for the General Classification and some sprint stages. I was hoping, but I didn’t think I would win so early . Today I was riding well and I was able to give my best on the final straight, realizing that I was in the frame for a win. I stayed in the wheels for a while, coming out on the right in the final and, when I realized it was the right moment, I pushed hard. In the past few months I haven’t been able to give my best and I also crashed at the European Championships, so being here celebrating is a great feeling.”

Stage 2:  Nice → Nice, 187 km  Full Results and Report

Last year's overall winner, Egan BERNAL (INEOS - GRENADIERS) is keeping a low profile for now

The 28-year-old Frenchman now has six Grand Tour stage wins to his name

Emotional win

“I wanted so much to get a stage victory for my late father [who died in June at the age of 80]. This was my main goal coming into the race. Everything that comes from now on is a bonus, but I wanted this victory for him and knowing that I got it makes me so happy”, an emotional Julian said after the finish.

Caleb EWAN (AUS/LOTTO SOUDAL) wins Stage 3 in 5:17:42 ahead of 2 Sam BENNETT (IRL/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP), 3 Giacomo NIZZOLO (ITA/NTT PRO CYCLING), 4 Hugo HOFSTETTER (FRA/ISRAEL START - UP NATION), 5 Peter SAGAN (SVK/BORA - HANSGROHE), 6 Edward THEUNS (BEL/TREK - SEGAFREDO), 7 Cees BOL (NED/SUNWEB), 8 Matteo TRENTIN (ITA/CCC), 9 Bryan COQUARD (FRA/B&B HOTELS - VITAL CONCEPT P / B KTM), 10 Niccolò BONIFAZIO (ITA/TOTAL DIRECT ENERGIE)

Your Stage 3 winner after his daring sprint, Caleb EWAN (AUS/LOTTO SOUDAL): “The guys did a great job of keeping me in the front in the final. In the last kilometer I was literally too far forward, so I dropped back into the wheels. That gave me some time to rest the legs a little bit before the final leadout. Coming from behind was a bit of a risk but I found my way through the barrier and I came with a lot of speed. In the end it worked out perfectly.”

Race leader, Julian ALAPHILIPPE (DECEUNINCK - QUICK - STEP)

For his long solo effort Jerome COUSIN (TOTAL DIRECT ENERGIE) was awarded Combatif du jour

Now legitimately in Green, Peter SAGAN (SVK/BORA - HANSGROHE): "It was a pretty messy sprint. In the final three-four kilometres of the stage, we had a terrible headwind and everybody was all over the place, riders were coming to the front then dropping back, it was messy. Thanks to Daniel's leadout work we were able to position ourselves well but I think we launched the sprint too early and at about 150 metres from the finish I was overtaken from the right. Still, I'm happy for this green jersey, it's nice to wear it and I'll do my best to keep it all the way to Paris."

Stage 4:  Sisteron → Orcières-Merlette, 157 km  Full Results and Report

Primož ROGLIČ (SLO/JUMBO - VISMA) wins the Stage 4 summit finish in 4:07:47 ahead of 2 Tadej POGAČAR (SLO/UAE TEAM EMIRATES), 3 Guillaume MARTIN (FRA/COFIDIS), 4 Nairo QUINTANA (COL/ARKEA - SAMSIC), 5 Julian ALAPHILIPPE (FRA/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP), 6 Miguel Angel LOPEZ MORENO (COL/ASTANA PRO), 7 Egan Arley BERNAL GOMEZ (COL/INEOS), 8 Thibaut PINOT (FRA/GROUPAMA - FDJ), 9 Mikel LANDA MEANA (ESP/BAHRAIN - MCLAREN) and 10 Adam YATES (GBR/MITCHELTON - SCOTT)

Leading in the next group was 17th Emanuel BUCHMANN (GER/BORA - HANSGROHE) + 9s, 18th Enric MAS NICOLAU (ESP/MOVISTAR) and 19th Sepp KUSS (USA/JUMBO - VISMA)

The race action wasn't too exciting but these (maskless) guys made the best of it

Julian ALAPHILIPPE was caught taking a feed/water within 20k of the finish which is against the rules and suffered a 15s penalty dropping him out of the race lead

After a great lead out by his Sunweb teammates leaving him with the inside track to the line, Cees BOL (NED/SUNWEB) cannot bring it home as Wout VAN AERT (BEL/JUMBO - VISMA) surges up the outside

The bike throws at the line

Wout VAN AERT (BEL/JUMBO - VISMA) beats Cees BOL (NED/SUNWEB) by half a wheel

Wout VAN AERT (BEL/JUMBO - VISMA) wins Stage 5 in 4:21:22 ahead of 2 Cees BOL (NED/SUNWEB), 3 Sam BENNETT (IRL/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP), 4 Peter SAGAN (SVK/BORA - HANSGROHE), 5 Jasper STUYVEN (BEL/TREK - SEGAFREDO), 6 Luka MEZGEC (SLO/MITCHELTON - SCOTT), 7 Bryan COQUARD (FRA/B&B HOTELS - VITAL CONCEPT P / B KTM), 8 Caleb EWAN (AUS/LOTTO SOUDAL), 9 Clement VENTURINI (FRA/AG2R LA MONDIALE), 10 Hugo HOFSTETTER (FRA/ISRAEL START - UP NATION)

After helping his teammate win on yesterday's summit finish, Wout VAN AERT (BEL/JUMBO - VISMA) comes back the next day in wins a sprint finish: “This is a very nice win”, Van Aert said. “I am very grateful to the team for giving me the chance to go for it today. I am more than happy that I can reward their confidence with this stage win. I only got one chance and I took it. This is really awesome. It was a fairly easy stage, but the finish was still quite difficult. Because there was no breakaway during the stage and the fact that the pace was not too high, a lot of riders were still fresh. Because of the fast last hour and the wind, it got quite hectic in the end. I knew the stage was perfect for me. It was very important to choose position. I was positioned really well in the lead-out of Team Sunweb. I started my sprint when Bol accelerated. I now have my victory, so from tomorrow I will work for Primoz and Tom again. I will do so with great pleasure and happiness.”

Adam Yates (Mitchelton - Scott) is the new race leader after Julian ALAPHILIPPE suffered a 15s penalty

Wout VAN AERT (BEL/JUMBO - VISMA) wins Stage 7 in 3:32:03, 2 Edvald BOASSON HAGEN (NOR/NTT PRO CYCLING), 3 Bryan COQUARD (FRA/B&B HOTELS - VITAL CONCEPT P / B KTM), 4 Christophe LAPORTE (FRA/COFIDIS), 5 Jasper STUYVEN (BEL/TREK - SEGAFREDO), 6 Clement VENTURINI (FRA/AG2R LA MONDIALE), 7 Hugo HOFSTETTER (FRA/ISRAEL START - UP NATION), 8 Egan Arley BERNAL GOMEZ (COL/INEOS), 9 Adam YATES (GBR/MITCHELTON - SCOTT), 10 Alejandro VALVERDE (ESP/MOVISTAR), 11 Hugo HOULE (CAN/ASTANA PRO), 12 Julian ALAPHILIPPE (FRA/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP), 13 Peter SAGAN (SVK/BORA - HANSGROHE)

“I am very proud of this victory”, Van Aert said. “I am also proud of how we rode as a team today. It was a very fast stage because Bora immediately went full throttle on the first climb. After that, it never stopped. At the end there was still a lot of chaos and it was very hectic because of the crosswinds. Everyone feared them. The plan was to get Primoz and Tom through the stage without damage and time loss. That worked out well. The team was very strong again. I never expected such a mess and such a battle. Due to the fact that many sprinters were dropped and we were left in front with only a small group, I went for my own chance again. The guys started the sprint quite early and I was able to go along in the slipstream. When Boasson Hagen accelerated, I went along and timed my sprint perfectly. It took a lot of energy, but it was worth it. This is really amazing.”

Your Stage 7 winner, Wout VAN AERT (TEAM JUMBO VISMA) is the first rider to win two stages at this year's race

Race leader Adam YATES (MITCHELTON - SCOTT), "There were only a few critical moments where you had to be in position. The wind wasn’t crazy strong, but it was just kind of enough to create a few splits.

"But the guys looked after me perfectly, even in the final I ended up on my own just because they put me in position and used a lot of energy to keep me up there.

"The next two days should be pretty tough, I think today everyone was expecting to have an easier day before the two big mountain stages, but BORA-hansgrohe had other ideas and we rode pretty much full gas from start to finish. It was a hard day for everybody."

Peter Sagan (SVK - Bora - Hansgrohe) is back in Green: "I'm very proud of all my teammates, they did such a fantastic job today, they controlled the race. They pulled hard in the front of the peloton from the start, all day. In the end, there were crosswinds, and Emu and I stayed with the first group, everything was looking nice for the finish but, unfortunately, in the finale, my chain dropped off and I couldn't finish my sprint. I missed a lot of points but what can I do? That's cycling." – Peter Sagan

Best young rider, Egan BERNAL (INEOS - GRENADIERS)

For helping to blow apart the race, Daniel OSS (BORA - HANSGROHE) was awarded most combative rider

A victory salute worthy of your first Tour de France stage win

Tadej POGAČAR (SLO/UAE TEAM EMIRATES): “It is incredible to have won at the end of such a hectic day. Firstly I thank the team for the excellent work done throughout the stage. I am very happy, in the final my goal was to recover as many seconds as possible in the general classification, also aiming for bonuses, but the concentration was then turned to the sprint: I don’t remember exactly how I won the sprint, I just thought about pushing as hard as possible.

I arrive on the first rest day with a stage win, which is added to the one obtained in the first stage by my teammate Kristoff. I am happy with what we have done so far in this Tour, with only one off-day on the 7th stage”

I want to thank to the whole team for their confidence and support, to Patrick for giving me this opportunity, to my wife, my family and everyone around me. Caleb EWAN (AUS/LOTTO SOUDAL) wins Stage 11 in 4:00:01 ahead of 2 Peter SAGAN (SVK/BORA - HANSGROHE), 2 Sam BENNETT (IRL/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP), 3 Wout VAN AERT (BEL/JUMBO - VISMA), 4 Bryan COQUARD (FRA/B&B HOTELS - VITAL CONCEPT P / B KTM), 5 Clement VENTURINI (FRA/AG2R LA MONDIALE), 6 Mads PEDERSEN (DEN/TREK - SEGAFREDO), 7 Luka MEZGEC (SLO/MITCHELTON - SCOTT), 8 Hugo HOFSTETTER (FRA/ISRAEL START - UP NATION), 9 Oliver NAESEN (BEL/AG2R LA MONDIALE), 10 Ryan GIBBONS (RSA/NTT PRO CYCLING), 11 Matteo TRENTIN (ITA/CCC), 12 Alexander KRISTOFF (NOR/UAE TEAM EMIRATES)

“My closest opponent Sam Bennett is one of my best friends. It is always business when it comes down to sprinting. But we are happy for eachother when we win. I was very happy for him yesterday getting his first win. You saw how much it meant for him and I know how hard he worked for it.” said Caleb EWAN (AUS/LOTTO SOUDAL)

Your Stage 11 winner, Caleb EWAN (AUS/LOTTO SOUDAL): “It was such a crazy finish. I was in the front with 1.5km to go and dropped back because of the head wind. After my first stage win I knew I had to keep calm and wait for the right time and the gap to open. That happened quite late to the finish. I did a big throw on the line and didn’t know if I won. Break companion

After two valiant but unsuccessful solo attacks earlier in the Tour, barely 22 year-old Marc HIRSCHI (SUI/SUNWEB) gets to post up in the Tour de France while celebrating his first pro win winning by 47s over Pierre Rolland

Marc HIRSCHI (SUI/SUNWEB) and his team celebrate. A thrilled Team Sunweb coach Matt Winston said: “It was a really good performance today by the whole team and everyone fully committed to the plan for the finale. It was great to see them ride with so much confidence in each other. We wanted to make it hard on the third category climb, where Søren and Tiesj a brilliant job after some great position by our sprint guys, where they put them into a position where they could attack. Marc then followed across and we had three guys in a group of six. We knew it would be tough on the second category climb so Marc made his move there. Nico and Søren were in a group of chasers and they did a fantastic job of just blocking behind, not letting anyone else jump across to Marc, and Marc was able to solo to the finish. It was a super team effort. After all our hard work in the stages before, it is really nice victory.”

After alot of work by his team Peter SAGAN (SVK/BORA - HANSGROHE) finshed 13th + 2:30 to earn 4 Green Jersey points. "It was a hard stage but you have to give your best and keep fighting every single day."

“The plan for today was to go for the breakaway, we really wanted to be there,” a jubilant and emotional Marc Hirschi said after the stage. “At the start we saw that CCC and Bora really controlled the race so we switched our tactics. Then we decided that Søren and Tiesj would go on the Category-3 climb and I would wait until the next climb. It was the plan that I followed Alaphilippe or the other big guys. Then at a moment I saw there was a lot more jumping from the bunch and just went for it and followed Jungels. The guys sat up ahead and brought me to the front and then the gap opened and we went full gas, before I then attacked on the last climb. I’m happy that I had the confidence to go there, because without the last few stages where we were so close to the win, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to go for it today. I just went all out. I didn’t believe I would make it until the last kilometre; it is a dream come true.”

Most combative rider and Stage 12 winner, Marc HIRSCHI (SUI/SUNWEB) is neighbors with Fabian Cancellara (his agent) and is nicknamed Baby Spartacus... and now we know why

Peter Sagan (SVK - Bora - Hansgrohe) - Daniel Oss (ITA - Bora - Hansgrohe) were disappointed that Bora didn't get the win

Your Stage 13 winner, Daniel MARTINEZ (COL/EF PRO CYCLING): “I haven’t had the easiest of weeks. I didn’t have great sensations in the legs, I was a little shaken after my crash, but I knew I could win a stage and I did just that.

“Of course, yes, I was scared when I was along against the two Bora Riders. At the end of the stage when they were the only ones left with me and I saw they were close, I tried to follow for a bit. But then I worked and worked and gave everything on the climb. With 5km to go, I saw they were both struggling, and I could see that Kämna couldn’t hold his sprint and I knew that I could beat him.

“When we knew that Neilson Powless was with Schachmann, I kind of relaxed. But then he got dropped and I had work hard to bring him back along with the other riders in the breakaway. Once I was alone with Kämna I decided to set my pace and go full gas until the very end. I felt like Max Schachmann would be quite a bit stronger than me in the flat and downhill sections, but I managed to bridge back to him with 2km to go.

Seems like a rare photo of a rider without sunglasses or mask at this year's race; Soren Kragh Andersen (Denmark / Team Sunweb) post-win. From the team press release describing the win: After tasting sweet success on stage 12 of the Tour de France after some great riding set up Marc Hirschi to take the team’s first win of the race; the team hatched another plan to replicate that success today. Søren Kragh Andersen went solo in the finale, but with the team behind him to halt any chase - taking another fantastic win for Team Sunweb.

With the reduced peloton all back together heading towards the day’s final two climbs, Team Sunweb put their plan in motion with Tiesj Benoot launching a stinging attack on the opening ascent. Benoot was caught and after a lull in pace more attacks flew on the second climb. Stage-winner Hirschi was alert to any danger before he himself launched an attack, drawing some competitors clear. When the pace slowed once more, Søren Kragh Andersen delivered the perfectly timed attack, with a devastating turn of speed to get clear of the bunch. Utilising his time trial and descending skills to perfection and with the team halting any chase behind, Kragh Andersen could sit up and put his arms in the air as he crossed the line - taking a sublime second stage win for Team Sunweb at the Tour de France.

Your Stage 14 winner, Soren Kragh Andersen (Denmark / Team Sunweb) celebrates his first Grand Tour win. "I was never at my limit on the two hills in the final. Not even when Alaphilippe went hard. I could feel I had great legs so I just waited for the right moment and I took it".

Jumbo-Visma set a very high pace and maintained it throughout the stage, which along with the heat meant it was better not to attack. In the final, I waited for the sprint and took another beautiful victory. Some of the GC guys were dropped and this was due the effect of the pace set by Jumbo-Visma. Tomorrow we’ll have the rest day, then I’ll try to give my best again: at the moment, Roglic seems unbeatable, but anything can happen, anyone can have a bad day, as happened today to Bernal or as can happen to me or to Primoz”.

Søren KRAGH ANDERSEN (DEN/SUNWEB): "Two wins in the same Tour de France... I'm speechless"

Søren KRAGH ANDERSEN (DEN/SUNWEB) wins Stage 19. From the Team Sunweb press-release: Having already raised their arms aloft in victory twice so far at this year’s Tour de France, Team Sunweb set out with a plan to make it three wins this afternoon on stage 19. After another perfectly timed late attack, Søren Kragh Andersen went solo all the way to the line with Nikias Arndt perfectly disrupting any chase behind.

With a two-pronged approach of setting Cees Bol up for the finish, or following any dangerous moves in the finale, the team had several options to play. When a big group of 12 riders escaped, Nikias Arndt and stage 14 winner Søren Kragh Andersen excellently infiltrated the move for the team. With the peloton sitting up it soon became clear that those ahead would fight for stage honours. Sensing his moment to strike, Kragh Andersen produced a stunning attack to go clear on the right hand side of the road, with no one able to follow. As the gap continued to grow, Arndt did the perfect job behind to slow any chase - allowing Kragh Andersen enough time to sit up and celebrate as he took Team Sunweb’s third 2020 Tour de France stage win in Champagnole.

One final test for race leader, Primož ROGLIČ (SLO/JUMBO - VISMA) tomorrow, the Stage 20 TT ending with a summit finish.

The scene at the 20% section on La Planche des Belles Filles, the finish of the Stage 20 36 km ITT

Early action on the flat section

Early rider, Jasper De Buyst (Belgium / Team Lotto Soudal)

Jan Hirt (Czech / Team CCC) negotiating through the fans

Tim Declercq (Belgium / Team Deceuninck - Quick Step)

Amazing shot; We knew there was going to be a GC battle for the Yellow Jersey when Tadej POGAČAR (SLO/UAE TEAM EMIRATES) blazed the flat section

He never let up... Tadej POGAČAR (SLO/UAE TEAM EMIRATES) climbed like a bat out of hell too. Notice no computer or power meter either.

Tadej POGAČAR (SLO/UAE TEAM EMIRATES) turned a 57s deficit into a 59s advantage!

Tadej POGAČAR (SLO/UAE TEAM EMIRATES) digging for the stage win, Yellow Jersey and the Polka-Dot Jersey

Tadej POGAČAR (SLO/UAE TEAM EMIRATES) crosses first by a whomping 1:21

That hurt; Tadej POGAČAR (SLO/UAE TEAM EMIRATES) finally lets up

Stunning. Tadej POGAČAR (SLO/UAE TEAM EMIRATES) may be too young (22 yrs old this Monday) to know what he accomplished.

Some stayed on their TT bike the entire way. 2nd Tom DUMOULIN (NED/JUMBO - VISMA) + 1:21

2nd Tom DUMOULIN (NED/JUMBO - VISMA) + 1:21

Overshadowed by the Yellow Jersey battle was Richie PORTE's (AUS/TREK - SEGAFREDO) impressive ride that gave him a podium spot seen here passing Mikel LANDA (ESP/BAHRAIN - MCLAREN) who also moved up one spot

3rd Richie PORTE (AUS/TREK - SEGAFREDO) in the same time as Dumoulin + 1:21 to move him onto the GC podium in 3rd. "I'm over the moon to finally be on the podium". 3rd at the Tour for a 35 year-old!

After loads of work for the team over three weeks, 4th Wout VAN AERT (BEL/JUMBO - VISMA) + 1:31

Bike throw at the finish for a new best time at the moment, 4th Wout VAN AERT (BEL/JUMBO - VISMA) + 1:31

After losing time on the flat section, Primož ROGLIČ (SLO/JUMBO - VISMA) lost even more on the climb

Primož ROGLIČ (SLO/JUMBO - VISMA) just never looked good on his bike today, but he still finished just 25 seconds behind Dumoulin

A stage like this is a bad time to break out a new helmet especially one that looks two sizes too small; Primož ROGLIČ (SLO/JUMBO - VISMA) didn't earn any style points today

Primož ROGLIČ (SLO/JUMBO - VISMA) up to his knees in trouble on the 20% section

The desperation was written all over Primož ROGLIČ (SLO/JUMBO - VISMA) face as he crossed the line in 5th + 1:56 dropping him out of the Yellow Jersey.

6th Rémi CAVAGNA (FRA/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP) + 1:59 held the best time for most of the day

Enric MAS (ESP/MOVISTAR) was 9th + 2:45 to move up to 5th overall + 6:07

Mikel LANDA (ESP/BAHRAIN - MCLAREN) looks bagged but his 14th place finish + 3:27 moved him up one GC spot from 5th to 4th

You got to hand it to the local boy, Thibaut PINOT (FRA/GROUPAMA - FDJ), he said he would finish the Tour de France despite his problems and it looks like he will. He finished 19th today + 4:09.

Worst GC ride of the day, 45th MIGUEL ANGEL LOPEZ (ASTANA PRO) + 6:17 dropping him from 3rd at the start of the day down to 6th.

KOM leader Richard CARAPAZ (ECU/INEOS) had the advantage of the taking the flat section easy, but he still couldn't match Tadej POGAČAR on the final climb (nobody could) and his brief stint in the Polka-Dot Jersey is over

Primož ROGLIČ (SLO/JUMBO - VISMA) looking a little delerious post Stage 20. He was still 5th today and in many Tours this would be the winner's look of disbelief.

Everything had gone right for JUMBO - VISMA at this Tour up until today

Your Stage 20 ITT winner, Tadej POGAČAR (SLO/UAE TEAM EMIRATES) is the youngest rider (22 years old this coming Monday) to win a Tour de France time-trial since 1947 according to @irishpeloton.

Tadej POGAČAR (SLO/UAE TEAM EMIRATES)

Your new race leader and soon to be overall winner at the 2020 Tour de France, Tadej POGAČAR (SLO/UAE TEAM EMIRATES) by 59s... a name we'll hear for a long time. “I’m dreaming. I am very proud of this jersey that repays all the efforts made by the team up to this last phenomenal push to put me in yellow. I dreamed of winning this Tour since I was a boy and now it has come true.<>p/I must say that the credit is not only mine, but of all the members of UAE Team Emirates and the sponsors who support us. We had come here to the TT for a reconnaissance, so I knew what we were going to do and I knew where to accelerate and where to manage the effort: today I only had to think about pushing hard from start to finish.

During the time trial I felt that I was going strong and this spurred me even more.

My dream as a cyclist was to participate in the Tour de France, winning it definitely goes further”

Bravo is right

A name to remember however you pronounce it... youngest Tour winner in 96 years

For the first time in a long time, the best rider is also the winner of mountains classification. Tadej POGAČAR (SLO/UAE TEAM EMIRATES) also the best young rider. The first time a rider has finished with three of the leaders' jersey since Eddy Merckx did it in 1969.

Primož ROGLIČ (SLO/JUMBO - VISMA) gets a hung from an UAE staff member

Primož ROGLIČ (SLO/JUMBO - VISMA) quickly put his shocking loss into perspective

Who cares... it is just a bike race. Looks like the healing process has already started, but with so many good young riders in the peloton, will the 30 year-old Primož ROGLIČ (SLO/JUMBO - VISMA) ever have a better chance of the winning the Tour de France? Probably not.
