Jonathan CAICEDO (ECU/EF PRO CYCLING): “I’ve made a dream come true. It’s only my second year as a pro rider and it’s been very hard. I woke up this morning with the intention to make the breakaway and try and win the stage. I achieved it and it makes me very happy. The last kilometres have been a mix of suffering, emotions and pain. Now that I’m in a good position, I’ll keep fighting on GC.” | share this photo |

Jonathan Vaughters, team CEO said post-race “We proved that rain, UCI fines, and fans being scandalized by our new kit were all just … water off a duck’s back,” said team CEO Jonathan Vaughters. “I’m so thrilled for Jonathan and for the whole team working together to make today’s big win on the mountain happen. His ride was a surprise to most, and it had grit and style. Obviously everyone has been talking about the Palace and Rapha kit, which has been so cool to see. Even cooler? Winning in it, and showing that we’re here to race the Giro, too.” | share this photo |

2nd in the opening TT and 11th today + 1:03, João ALMEIDA (POR/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP) is the new race leader | share this photo |

The Maglia Rosa João Almeida said: “I can’t describe how it feels to have the Maglia Rosa. It’s a dream come true. From the beginning of the climb, it was quite fast. I was informed more or less of the time gaps. I knew Geraint [Thomas] was dropped but I was still worried about Simon Yates who is very punchy but he got dropped also. I controlled the situation at my pace. 3 to 4km before the top, the wind was very strong. I did as much as I could. It’s been a lot of suffering until the finishing line. I think I’ll try to keep the Maglia Rosa as long as I can.” | share this photo |
