“This is my third win in this season alone, and it’s really something special. It was a difficult time trial, and I didn’t completely know if I could pull it off, particularly in such a strong field which also contains riders of the calibre of Alaphilippe. We’ve come to this race with a very strong team, and therefore we have several options. And of course we have come here with big ambitions and we also want to achieve more in this race.” – Max Schachmann

Victor de la Parte (CCC) on the an unsuccessful solo break

Race leasder, Maximilian SCHACHMANN (GER/BORA - HANSGROHE) leads it through the final corner

Followed by 2nd Diego ULISSI (ITA/UAE TEAM EMIRATES) and other riders that survived the crashes: “The final was complicated, but working together with the team we managed to get ourselves in a good position. I am satisfied with my sprint, it was excellent, but Schachmann was just better. I am pleased to have found a nice kick, it is a good sign for the next stages and, looking further ahead, for the Ardennes Classics“

3rd Enrico BATTAGLIN (ITA/KATUSHA ALPECIN)

The dig for the line

Maximilian SCHACHMANN (GER/BORA - HANSGROHE) wins Stage 3 in 4:47:57 ahead of 2nd Diego ULISSI (ITA/UAE TEAM EMIRATES), 3rd Enrico BATTAGLIN (ITA/KATUSHA ALPECIN) and 4th Marc HIRSCHI (SUI/SUNWEB)

Maximilian SCHACHMANN (GER/BORA - HANSGROHE) extends his overall lead to 33s

Post race press-conference: "I want to thank the whole team. The guys supported me, like always, very well, and this was clear to see yet again today. In the finale, the were a crash and I hope that all the riders involved are ok. In the finish, I had Gregor and Jay there with me, and they brought me into a good position. I had good legs and that allowed me to notch up the win and defend my leader’s jersey. Yesterday we had a meeting and we discussed what I could do better, and today I implemented that, and it worked. I feel good and am happy to be able to reward the hard work of my team with this win. We still have three hard stages ahead of us, and I hope that I will still have something left in the tank after today.” -Maximillian Schachmann

Stage 4:  Vitoria-Gasteiz → Arrigorriaga, 164 km  Full Results and Report

Four man bunch sprint in Arrigorriaga

Maximilian SCHACHMANN (GER/BORA - HANSGROHE) on his way to winning Stage 4 in 4:03:55 ahead of 2nd Tadej POGAČAR (SLO/UAE TEAM EMIRATES), 3rd Jakob FUGLSANG (DEN/ASTANA PRO) + 1 and 4th Adam YATES (GBR/MITCHELTON - SCOTT)

The margin of victory

“I don’t really know what to say. It’s my third win here and I’ll need some time to process this. The weather conditions were very bad today, even worse than predicted. It was relatively cold and it rained continuously. In the end, I was exhausted, but I was really motivated to win today. I was in a perfect position in the finishing straight, and was able to sprint across the line first. Tomorrow it will be a hard stage, but we will of course do our best to net a good result.” - Max Schachmann

It was a hectic stage, with the rain and the cold making everything more complicated” Pogacar said. “Our team raced very well, managing to ride all day long in the first part of the group. Thanks to the work of my companions I was able to save energy that was very useful in the difficult final. Six kilometres from the finish, I was involved in a crash, but I was able to get up immediately and return to the group, retaining the brilliance necessary to attack in view of the top of the last climb. I gave my best to try to win, but Schachmann was too strong”.
