Nairo QUINTANA (COL/MOVISTAR) holds of the break to win Stage 2 in 5:11:17 by 5s

Nairo QUINTANA (COL/MOVISTAR): "We didn't expect the front split in the Puig Llorença to be such a small group - we expected to have a sprint stage, maybe with a quite restricted peloton, but still with some sprinters there. Alejandro and I tried to make those moves after the top, going one rider at a time, and once that six-man group went away, I tried to keep taking turns so the pace didn't stop. I found a moment to attack and didn't hesitate nor looked behind: if it sticked, great, and if it didn't, at least I would have been trying.

"We're only two days into this race; there's so much still left, we must not get too optimistic with this win. It's a joy we will surely enjoy, because of the morale it gives you, and it will surely make the team ride calmer and stronger. But there's all mountains still to cover in this Vuelta."

Sam BENNETT (IRL/BORA - HANSGROHE) wins Stage 3 in 4:25:02 ahead of 2nd Edward THEUNS (BEL/TREK - SEGAFREDO), 3rd Luka MEZGEC (SLO/MITCHELTON - SCOTT), 4th Jon ABERASTURI IZAGA (ESP/CAJA RURAL - SEGUROS RGA), 5th Phil BAUHAUS (GER/BAHRAIN - MERIDA), 6th Maximiliano Ariel RICHEZE (ARG/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP), 7th Fabio JAKOBSEN (NED/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP)

Sam Bennett: “I always feel the pressure of expectation and always want that win on a sprint stage. The boys were really amazing today, they made the win possible and I'm really grateful. The lead out was messy with Shane being pushed off my wheel by Trek and Jempy also having to fight hard but both those guys did a super job! Really happy to take my 4th Grand Tour stage victory and hopefully my first of many at the Vuelta. Red Jersey and a stage win: Huge day for Irish cycling and one we can all cherish.”

The best way to feel wanted by your team is to continue to win

Fabio JAKOBSEN (NED/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP) wins Stage 4 in 4:04:16 ahead of 2nd Sam BENNETT (IRL/BORA - HANSGROHE), 3rd Maximilian Richard WALSCHEID (GER/SUNWEB), 4th Fernando GAVIRIA RENDON (COL/UAE TEAM EMIRATES), 5th Luka MEZGEC (SLO/MITCHELTON - SCOTT), 6th Marc SARREAU (FRA/GROUPAMA - FDJ), 7th Szymon SAJNOK (POL/CCC)

“It was a really tight finish and I just threw my bike to the line and closed my eyes. I found out that I had won only when I saw the guys from the team cheering. I am very happy, I really can’t put it into words. I came here to discover and learn, but I was confident I could pull it off and now I’m just savouring this victory”, Fabio JAKOBSEN (NED/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP) said, beaming with happiness.

Sam Bennett was disappointed he didn't pip Fabio Jakobsen. “Disappointed to take second place but genuinely delighted for Fabio on his first Grand Tour stage win. Unfortunately, everything that could go wrong went wrong in the final. I lost maybe 5 positions when I went the long way around the roundabout and had to really fight to get back up to the leading positions. Our riders had already made a huge effort working to pull the race back so my thanks to them for that, it simply meant I was fighting for myself to get on the right wheel and I simply ran out of metres. The legs were great so we'll fight again!”
