Thomas de Gendt (Belgium / Team Lotto Soudal) arrives at the finish in Calella to win by 2 minutes and 38s, his fourth career win at this race: “I absolutely wanted to be in the breakaway today to aim for the stage win. I tried to take the mountains jersey as well, but I did not want to waste too much energy on this. The peloton quickly brought down our bonus to two minutes, but I did not panic. The hardest part was yet to come, being a short and steep hill. I was riding at a very high pace there, hoping the strongest would survive, but only Luis Maté was able to follow. However, he could not take the lead anymore and he just stayed in my wheel until the next hill, the Coll Formic. Because I knew Maté really was at his limit, I attacked again and he had to let go.”

“From there on I was on my own, but I knew the descent very well due to my experience from the previous editions. I knew what was ahead of me, thus I could anticipate with my watts. Some parts I did at a higher pace than others. It was to my advantage that I have covered the final 40 kilometres already seven times. Each year during the weeks of Paris-Nice and the Volta a Catalunya, I am in great shape. I always look forward to this period. In Paris-Nice my shape went only upwards, so I felt excellent. Because of the calm week that followed, I presumed to perform even better in Catalonia.”

“On the first day, there is no GC leader yet, so then it is difficult to find a team willing to lead the chase. For the sprinters it was a bit too tough today and I responded well to that. On top of that, I think the GC riders will not care too much about me. The two uphill finishes could make me lose fifteen minutes, so it does not really matter that I am two minutes ahead now. Tomorrow I should keep the leader’s jersey, but I suppose I will not be able to follow the top riders on the next day.”

Your Stage 2 winner, Michael MATTHEWS (AUS/SUNWEB): “Coming into the final kilometres I was able to move up to the front on the downhill and flat before the climb to the finish. I positioned myself near Valverde as I thought he was the favourite for the day. I timed my sprint really well, starting with 150 metres to go and managed to hold everyone off. The team rode really well from the start, we were always in control of the race and never let it get out of hand and came out with the win. I’m happy to get the win for them.”

Feeding before the summit finish

Five riders at the front inside 1 km to go

After being dropped earlier, Daniel MARTIN (IRL/UAE TEAM EMIRATES) attacks with 200m to go: “The pace on the final climb was high, we were going quickly up until the start of the climb, so the work of my team-mates was even more important. They kept me in great position,” Martin (photo) said. “I had good feelings, I tried to go at my pace and it allowed me to return to the front in the last kilometres. When I returned, I tired to play my cards in the sprint, keeping sure that I was at the front in the last two curves, above all in the last turn at 200 metres to the line. Unfortunately, this curve was a little narrower than I expected and I had to take the inside line, I had to slow down and this favoured Yates, and he had fresher legs. Third place is great. I would’ve preferred to win. I’ll try again tomorrow“

Adam YATES (GBR/MITCHELTON - SCOTT) wins the summit finish at Vallter 2000 in 5:02:18, 2nd Egan Arley BERNAL GOMEZ (COL/SKY), 3rd Daniel MARTIN (IRL/UAE TEAM EMIRATES), 4th Nairo QUINTANA (COL/MOVISTAR)

Adam YATES: “Last week I showed that I was in good condition, I came up short there and I really wanted to win today. On the climb Bernal and Quintana were really strong, when they attacked I held back a little bit just to pace my effort and slowly, slowly came back to them.”

“Then it was a bit of a game. Quintana didn’t really want to work and in the end it was a sprint with 200metres to go and I managed to finish it off.”

“Tomorrow we have another tough stage and another possibly for a stage win but we will see. So far so good, the team did a super job to look after me, so more of the same tomorrow hopefully.”

Maximilian SCHACHMANN (GER/BORA - HANSGROHE) celebrates an impressive solo win by 13s: “I knew, I am in a really good shape, therefore I wanted to achieve another stage victory at the Volta a Catalunya. After a second and fourth place, I knew I had to try it again, because there are not so many stages left. As the group attacked I joined them and with 20k to go, I thought, that we’ll have a good chance to make it to the finish. On the descent I attacked and just pulled to give it everything. I am so happy with the outcome and that I collected the points to now lead the points classification.”

Sprint finish in Vila-Seca

Michael Matthews (Australia / Team Sunweb) vs. Phil Bauhaus (Germany / Team Bahrain - Merida)

Incredibly close photo finish goes to Michael Matthews (Australia / Team Sunweb): “I was really tired after the difficult few stages we’ve had so I wasn’t sure if I would be up for the sprint today. However, around halfway through the stage I felt much better and the team started to work at the front. The sprint was very technical but the guys positioned me at the head of the bunch coming under the flamme rouge. I followed the right wheels and just had enough to hold on for the win. The team were very motivated to get a result for Wilco today after his crash in yesterday’s stage and I’m really happy we pulled it off.”

“In the end it was all about legs and he was few cms stronger than me or he did a better stroke of the bike” the German rider Phil Bauhaus (Germany / Team Bahrain - Merida) says describing the sprint “In the final Caruso helped me and I was really well positioned. With 300m to go I found myself on the wheel of Matthews and I think today I started the sprint in the right moment. For sure you can be disappointed if you lose so close. I’m sure in the future we can make one place better”.

Your Stage 2 and now Stage 6 winner, Michael Matthews (Australia / Team Sunweb):

Stage 7:  Barcelona → Barcelona, 143 km  Full Results and Report

20 km to go: Adam Yates (GBR / Team Mitchelton - Scott) and his brother Simon animated the final stage in a last ditch effort to take the leader's jersey from Miguel Angel Lopez (Columbia / Team Astana). Adam opened up a 40s gap that was later closed down.

Solo win Davide Formolo (ITA - Bora - Hansgrohe) by 50s: “I can’t describe how happy I am. The victory means a lot to me. I went into today’s stage with the goal to be in the breakaway and to try from there to win the stage. On the local laps I thought, now or never, so I just attacked. I pulled so hard, but I knew with 8 km to go that I could make it. The team was great this week, we achieved a lot at this Volta a Catalunya. Now it is time to go home, rest and look forward to the next races.”
