Photo finish won by Dylan Groenewegen (Netherlands / Team Jumbo - Visma)

Dylan Groenewegen (Netherlands / Jumbo - Visma) wins Stage 1 ahead of Caleb Ewan (Australia / Team Lotto Soudal) and Fabio Jakobsen (Netherlands / Team Deceuninck - Quick Step)

Your Stage 1 winner and first race leader, Dylan Groenewegen (Netherlands / Jumbo - Visma): "The team was really fantastic. My teammates did a really great job by protecting me well and keeping me out of trouble all day", the Dutchman said. “It was a short stage, but very difficult because of the wind. The lead out was good and I’m glad I was able to finish it off. It was extremely close, but I knew right away that I had won. It was a typical Dutch day: a lot of wind, lots of echelons and a continuous fight for your position. We knew in advance that this could happen. It's awesome. The fact that I beat all the top sprinters and clinched the yellow jersey makes it even better. I am already looking forward to the coming sprint stages.”

Dylan GROENEWEGEN (NED/JUMBO - VISMA) wins ahead of 2nd Ivan GARCIA CORTINA (ESP/BAHRAIN - MERIDA) and 3rd Philippe GILBERT (BEL/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP)

Dylan GROENEWEGEN (NED/JUMBO - VISMA): “Today was a very tough stage because of the crosswinds. There was a continuous fight for positions and a continuous racing at the limit. It was far from easy. The team did a perfect job and after the last corner they put me in an ideal position. I am very proud of my success and especially proud of how we rode as a team”, the stage winner said. “It was difficult at times, but my teammates got me through it. In the end, we remained with seven leaders. It was a matter of waiting and to not start the sprint too early. When Trentin accelerated, I started my sprint and I was able to finish it off. Two stages, two victories: I am very happy. Tomorrow there is another flat stage. It will be a tough one again due to the wind, but we are going for it again.”

2nd Ivan GARCIA CORTINA (ESP/BAHRAIN - MERIDA): "My teammates and me were fought good today. We were here taking care for Sonny, but I found my self in the good position at the front and couldn't look back any more and decided to my very best. I learned a lot out of today's race how to go with a sprint. It my be a bit tricky when to go for it. Sometimes it is too early or sometimes too late. I felt good today for starting it on right time. I am happy for my result today. I am not disappointed at all, but I also want to win. For my head I need a victory and hopefully it will come soon".

The winning margin

Sam Bennett: “I didn’t train that much in the cold this winter and therefore had some troubles the last two days. But I knew the form is there and today I felt a lot better. Of course, the stage was also easier, but there are a lot of great sprinters here in the peloton this year. Groenewegen was almost unbeatable the last two days, but today everything went perfect for me. The boys did a great job, they knew exactly what to do on the last kilometer and delivered me in a perfect position. I want to thank the whole BORA – hansgrohe squad, I am more than happy with this stage win. I really wanted to pay back the hard work of the guys. It was a long sprint, but I knew I could do it. It seems like Paris – Nice likes me like I like the race.”

Simon YATES (MITCHELTON - SCOTT) won the 25.5 km Stage 5 ITT in 30:26 by 7s

Simon Yates (GBR - Mitchelton - Scott): I am really happy with my performance, I have been working on my time trial quite a lot the last few years but I didn’t really expect to be fastest today. At the start of the day I thought it was for the TT specialists. So especially with how this course was I am very happy. It was really straight forward, there weren’t any corners you really needed to brake for, it was just in the skis, so a pretty filthy time trial for a guy of my size. The climb in the middle wasn’t real hard, the climb up to the finish line was probably harder so I am really happy with what I did today. The sensations are good for the next days, I knew I had good form, well decent form coming into the race and just got caught out in the crosswinds, it wasn’t from a lack of form or anything.

While looking for a file TT photo of Nils POLITT, 2nd today + 7s in the Paris-Nice Stage 5 ITT but missing from today's photo sources, I discovered he also finished 2nd on Stage 5 at last year's PN. Remember, Jerome COUSIN tacked to his wheel in the final kms?

Sprint finish in Brignoles

Sam Bennett (IRL - Bora - Hansgrohe) winning margin over Arnaud Demare (France / Team Groupama FDJ)

Sam Bennett: “I wanted to go hard today, because it was a perfect stage in terms of preparation for Sanremo. I thought I wouldn’t be able to survive the second last climb, but I made it. In the last few kilometres I had really good legs. I knew there is no need to panic, I just had to follow my teammates, who did a fantastic job. I got almost boxed in on the final metres but made my way through. I could beat some of the best sprinters once again, I am really looking forward to Sanremo now, which is my first goal of the season.”

Stage 8:  Nice → Nice, 110 km  Full Results and Report

KOM winner, Thomas DE GENDT (LOTTO SOUDAL): “I only had to keep an eye on one rider today, which made the race a bit easier. Still, De Marchi was part of the big front group but eventually, he did not really battle anymore. It became a sprint towards the foot of the first climb, which I started in a good position. Then, I still had six kilometres to move up, so I did. When I took the seven points there, I knew that a lot would have to happen to let it slip through my fingers.”

“I would have liked to battle for the stage win, but my legs felt - especially after yesterday’s stage - quite heavy. My mental finish line was at the top of the third climb today. The fourth ascent is just a little too hard for me. Then, I decided to recover as much as possible towards the many other races I will take part in. I think that it was a good Paris-Nice for Lotto Soudal, but we could have won three stages as well. My next race will be the Volta a Catalunya, where the stages should suit me even a little more. But first, some time for recovery.”

Your Stage 8 winner, Ion IZAGUIRRE (ASTANA PRO TEAM): "This was the classical stage of the Paris-Nice and we knew pretty well the attacks and breakaways could bring success. So we had a good plan to animate the race from the start. Finally, I was able to go in the break together with my teammates, Luis Leon, Miguel Angel, and Hugo. Indeed, it was a great day for us, we wanted to improve the position of Luis Leon in the general classification but also to fight for the stage. I felt good during the whole day and in a moment when I say a possibility I attacked. I was able to get a gap and continued pushing the pedals until the finish. I am super happy with my win, I wanted to win this stage so badly! I think we did a strong race here at the Paris-Nice with the victories of Magnus Cort and mine. I know that in the same moment Jakob Fuglsang took a win at the Tirreno-Adriatico, so I congratulate him as well!"

Your 2019 Paris-Nice podium: 2nd Nairo QUINTANA (COL/MOVISTAR) + 39s, 1st Egan BERNAL (COL/SKY) 29:17:02, 3rd Michal KWIATKOWSKI (POL/SKY) + 1:03

Team Sky once again dominated this year's Paris-Nice with 1st and 3rd overall. Team Sky has won 6 of the last 8 Paris-Nice with 5 different riders. At 22 years-old, Egan BERNAL (COL/SKY) is the youngest winner since 1935.
