Stage 1: Riders Recon Full Results and Report
| You'd expect EF Education First to do good recon | This is how 2012 winner Sep Vanmarcke spends his mornings before the first classic of the season. “If you are Belgian and you sit at breakfast and open the local newspapers you can read the pressure,” EF Education First sport director Andreas Klier laughs. “Every Belgian rider wants to be on this top level. But also I’ve started to feel it over the last few days when I’m training or in the supermarket, to feel people are awake again because the Classics are coming. People are super happy I won that stage [at Haut Var] and on my training days, they’ve been stopping their cars to shout ‘Congratulations’, ‘Good job’, ‘Keep going’ and ‘Good luck this weekend,’” Vanmarcke says, trying to convey just how much the momentum is beginning to build. | Video from EF Education First recon | CCC Team with two time Omloop Het Nieuwsblad winner, Greg VAN AVERMAET (BEL), recon'ing this year's course, the 74th edition | Getting passed by a local | The peacefulness is a contrast to race day | Other than being chilly, it was beautiful day for a ride whether you are a pro or amateur | Cobbles | Greg VAN AVERMAET attacks on the penultimate climb Muur van Geraardsbergen | No one was around to cheer him on | Not quite the same climb without the raucous crowd | Greg VAN AVERMAET looks ready for his third win: “I am feeling really good ahead of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and am excited to start the Classics season. During the winter and early season races, this is what I am always thinking about so it is nice to have the first race here. I think my shape is exactly where it needs to be and I was really impressed by my teammates in Valencia and Oman which was a good sign for the Classics. Although this will be the first cobbled race for us, half of us train together every day in Belgium so we are comfortable as a team.” Watch Omloop Het Nieuwsblad Live Saturday | The next day... glistening cobbles in the morning | Wanty - Gobert | Team Sky | Lars BOOM (NED) leads ROOMPOT - CHARLES | Team Jumbo - Visma | 3rd at Strade Bianche last year cyclo-cross star Wout VAN AERT (left) will race with his new road team Jumbo-Visma for the first time this Saturday | Michael MATTHEWS (AUS/SUNWEB), Sunweb's team leader for Saturday's race. | Your winner, Zdenek Stybar (Czech / Team Deceuninck - Quick Step) | Your Podium, 3rd Tim Wellens (Belgium / Team Lotto Soudal), 1st Zdenek Stybar (Czech / Team Deceuninck - Quick Step), 2nd Greg van Avermaet (Belgium Team CCC) | Zdenek Stybar (Czech / Team Deceuninck - Quick Step): “The race was different than last year, because we had a tailwind in the second part and this helped. The real race started on the Molenberg and we worked well together, even on the Muur and Bosberg, believing we could make it to the finish line. Initially, I was waiting for the sprint, but with two kilometers left I felt it was the right moment to go and thus went full gas.”The first Czech rider in history to win a cobbled Classic, thanks to a textbook canny attack, Stybar stressed out the importance of the Wolfpack and the mentality that continues to drive the team, regardless of the race: “I have the same motivation as last year, I have always kept believing I could come back and win big races, especially as my winter preparation went well. From the team car, Tom Steels told me how much confidence they had in me and that I had what it took to finish it off. The attitude of this team is unique, the support you receive is tremendous and nobody calls himself a leader; we all work together for the same goal, because we are the Wolfpack, and that’s why we are so successful.” Also see Photos from the Pre-Race Teams Presentation in Merelbeke | Solo win for Chantal Blaak (Boels-Dolmans) in the women's race after attacking on the final climb of the Bosberg |
