I didn't have any particular tactic except for going as fast as possible. I'm surprised by the gaps. Two days ago I met Gianni Bugno who wore the Maglia Rosa from start to finish [in 1990]. I don't know if I can do this too but the most important is to have the Maglia Rosa in Verona.”

The stage winner Pascal Ackermann said: “It was always a big goal for me to do races like this. I’m speechless after I won my first stage in a Grand Tour today. Last year was a big step in my career with many victories and the whole Bora-Hansgrohe team is in a good mood to continue in a winning mode this year. I’m a happy man because I live my dream of winning races as a professional cyclist. I’ve always wanted to do that.”

"I'm incredibly happy to have won here. Even though I meet my competitors like Caleb Ewan and Elia Viviani at other races, it is special to have taken the win here at the Giro. Of course there is more pressure to win at a Grand Tour and that is why I am so happy. It was my first chance for a win and we accomplished our goal. It is also very special to me to have won wearing the German championship jersey.”

The rest of the break

As the virtual Pink Jersey, Valerio CONTI (ITA/UAE TEAM EMIRATES) was content to follow Fausto MASNADA (ITA/ANDRONI GIOCATTOLI - SIDERMEC) who did most of the work leading up to the finish

After having done most of the work in the break, Fausto MASNADA (ITA/ANDRONI GIOCATTOLI - SIDERMEC) still had enough to outsprint Valerio CONTI (ITA/UAE TEAM EMIRATES)

Fausto MASNADA (ITA/ANDRONI GIOCATTOLI - SIDERMEC) wins Stage 6 in San Giovanni Rotondo

The stage winner Fausto Masnada said in the press conference: “It took us one and half hours to make the break. The rhythm was crazy. Luckily I was in the right move. We cooperated well. There were several strong rouleurs in the group and I knew I had to make the difference in the climb because sprinting isn’t my forte. Valerio Conti understood that it was the right thing to do and we rode together till the finish. Today I got something I didn’t expect. It makes me enthusiastic and happy.”

The GC group with the Pink Jersey finished over 7 minutes later

Your Stage 6 winner, Fausto MASNADA (ITA/ANDRONI GIOCATTOLI - SIDERMEC). His first Grand Tour win and the first for his team at the Giro since 2012.

The Maglia Rosa Valerio Conti said in the press conference: “I knew Roglic intended to let the Maglia Rosa go to someone else. But the whole peloton knew it too. Many of us wanted to break away. Fausto Masnada was stronger than me. For an Italian, the Maglia Rosa is the nicest thing on earth. I’ll try to hold on to it as long as I can, until my legs and heart say stop.”

Caleb EWAN (AUS/LOTTO SOUDAL) wins Stage 8 in 5:43:32 ahead of 2nd Elia VIVIANI (ITA/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP) and 3rd Pascal ACKERMANN (GER/BORA - HANSGROHE)

Your Stage 8 winner, Caleb EWAN (AUS/LOTTO SOUDAL): “When I looked at the layout of the finish before the start, I planned to take the last corner first but I wasn’t feeling so good today, because we had a harder race than I thought. In the last 20km, I had to use all my guys to chase attackers down, including my lead out man, therefore, sprinting from 300 metres to go would have been too much. So I took the wheel of Ackermann who had a guy in front of him. I knew I could pass him in the last 150 metres. It means a lot to me being back winning a Grand Tour stage and this is obviously my biggest win so far for Lotto-Soudal.”

Valerio Conti dons his second Maglia Rosa as race leader: “I’m having the happiest days of my life. I don’t want to put any limit as to when I’ll lose the Maglia Rosa. The time trial will be very difficult tomorrow but I’ll give my best to retain the jersey. There are stronger people than me, I admit it, but my advantage on GC over the time trial specialists is quite large.”

Past overall winner, 4th Vincenzo NIBALI (ITA/BAHRAIN - MERIDA) + 1:05 appears to be the biggest GC threat to Primož ROGLIČ as others slip away

7th Bob JUNGELS (LUX/DECEUNINCK - QUICK-STEP) + 1:16

14th Rafal MAJKA (POL/BORA - HANSGROHE) + 2:04

Instead of rising to the occasion and walk the talk, Simon Yates' GC hopes went down the drain today. He inexplicably lost 1:50 on the finishing climb and placed 31st + 3:11

Race leader, Valerio CONTI (ITA/UAE TEAM EMIRATES)

Not so pretty in Pink. As the last rider, race leader Valerio CONTI (ITA/UAE TEAM EMIRATES) finished 38th + 3:34 in torrential conditions, but good enough to maintain his race lead by 1:50

A nice shot for Jasper De Buyst's (BEL - Lotto Soudal) mother, one week late

Your Stage 9 ITT winner, Primož ROGLIČ (SLO/JUMBO - VISMA) sticks another podium landing

“It’s not a surprise for me to win because in a time trial, I just focus on myself. I rode as fast as possible to the top and it went well. Some luck is also needed for winning. I feel sorry for Victor Campenaerts who had a mechanical. As for myself, I recce'd the course on the dry and it was rainy when I raced but I took no risk. Regardless of the time gaps today, many things can still happen until we cross the finish line in Verona.”

Primož is primed to take the overall lead again in the mountains next week

With a healthy overall lead to start the day, Valerio CONTI (ITA/UAE TEAM EMIRATES) stays in Pink heading into the first rest day: “Maybe I made a mistake with taking the visor off my helmet, I thought the rain was over but, it rained more and more. I possibly have lost about one minute on Primoz Roglic because I didn’t take any risk. I just wanted to retain the Maglia Rosa. I want to hold on to it as long as I can. I might not win the Giro this year but I might try to win it in the future.”

The stage winner Caleb Ewan said: “A longer stage today suited me a bit better than yesterday with the other sprinters having sore legs. I followed Pascal Ackermann's wheel because I knew he'd still be good [despite his crash yesterday]. He had a good lead out so it was a good wheel to sit on. I timed it right. I always considered myself one of the top sprinters. Two stage wins prove that I am really one of them.”

The Maglia Rosa Valerio Conti said, in the press conference: “My goal last winter was to prepare for one-week races and I did well at Vuelta San Juan in Argentina and second at the Tour of Turkey but the third week of the Giro is an unknown for me. I’ve never ridden for GC in a Grand Tour. To make the top 10 overall would be an important thing but firstly, I have to defend the Maglia Rosa tomorrow.”

The stage winner Cesare Benedetti said in the press conference: “I’m very happy. It’s a lot of emotion for a rider like me. It’s something I’ve waited for since the day I visited a start village of the Giro d’Italia in 1999. From that day, I dreamt of being a pro cyclist. When I got dropped on the final climb, I thought it’d be normal if the three ahead would watch each other. I came across. After the last bend, it was a bit early to go to the front because of the wind but my legs were still responding. I didn’t celebrate before the line as I’ve learned from the u17 category to not believe in the win too early and not to be too exuberant.”

The GC finishers much further back

Your Stage 13 winner, his first pro win, Cesare BENEDETTI (ITA/BORA - HANSGROHE): “I usually work hard for my teammates and today I had the opportunity to go into the breakaway to try something. We decided before the stage, that if a large breakaway group got away, then I would try to make it in that group. On the climb, I was forced to fall back somewhat, but eventually I was able to make contact with them again. The three riders who got away and rode on the front hesitated a bit and then I took my chance and in the end I was able to cross the line first. It’s a fantastic day for me and I’m very happy. Over the last few days, I was happy for my teammates and their success, and now I can also celebrate the fact that I was also able to take my own win here at the Giro.”

New race leader donning his first Pink Jersey, Jan POLANC (SLO/UAE TEAM EMIRATES)

UAE stays in the spotlight but with a different rider

The Maglia Rosa Jan Polanc said in the press conference: “Every rider who takes part in a Grand Tour dreams of a day like this. It will be hard to still have the Maglia Rosa in Verona but at least I’ll try to retain it tomorrow. It’ll depend on how much energy I have left. Today’s goal with the team was to keep the lead throughout a breakaway. There’ll be even bigger gaps than now at the end. The Giro has just begun for GC riders. There’s a big battle to come.”

This win is a little bit of a surprise for me. I just rode the last climb with all the energy and the power I had. I’m happy with what I’ve achieved today. Roglic is really strong. Your Stage 15 winner, Dario CATALDO (ITA/ASTANA): On the Civiglio climb I knew the gap and I knew how much we could lose at the top. I was more worried at the foot of the final descent because we had 30 seconds and Mattia wouldn't work with me any longer. In the final 1.5km, I managed to catch my breath a bit, save some energy, then I knew I could do a good sprint. I knew my capabilities and those of my rival. I rode from the front. I opened full gas and gave it everything.”

Your race leader, Richard CARAPAZ (ECU/MOVISTAR) improved his lead over on Primož ROGLIČ (SLO/JUMBO - VISMA) to 47s: “[About Primoz Roglic’s mechanical], that’s cycling. One day it happens to a rider, the other day it happens to another one. That’s part of the passion for this sport. I had good legs yesterday. I wasn’t at the front by coincidence. Stage winner, Giulio CICCONE (ITA/TREK - SEGAFREDO) said, “For sure this win is the one that makes me the happiest in my career. Beyond the victory, to have passed the Mortirolo in first position will remain a great memory. It’s such an important and historic climb! My main goal coming to the Giro was a stage win. The King of the Mountain competition is my second goal but I have such a big advantage now that I’ll just try to deal with it the best I can as well as staying close to our GC guy, Bauke Mollema. The Giro is not over. There are other hard stages to come.”

4th Vincenzo NIBALI (ITA/BAHRAIN - MERIDA) + 1:41, 5th Hugh John CARTHY (GBR/EF EDUCATION FIRST), 6th race leader, Richard CARAPAZ (ECU/MOVISTAR), 7th Mikel LANDA MEANA (ESP/MOVISTAR), 8th Joe DOMBROWSKI (USA/EF EDUCATION FIRST)

Another impressive showing by race leader, Richard CARAPAZ (ECU/MOVISTAR) who is 1:47 ahead of 2nd place Vincenzo NIBALI (ITA/BAHRAIN - MERIDA)

The Maglia Rosa Richard Carapaz said in the press conference: “It’s been a complicated stage because of the course and the weather towards the end. However, they were the same for everyone. It was cold but we’ve all cooperated to reach the finish. Thinking a bit about the closing time trial in Verona, Nibali attacked Roglic. Now we have a clear vision of who is up there on GC but there are still a lot of kilometres to recover any time lost. We can’t say we’re sure of anything yet.”

Your Stage 17 winner, Nans PETERS (FRA/AG2R LA MONDIALE): “I never won a pro race before, not even a category 1 race, so to win in the WorldTour and at the Giro, it’s enormous. It’s a relief after so many escapes I've been making for more than a year. I’m not fast enough in the sprints and I’m not one of the best climbers, so breaking away is my only way to win. I caught the opportunity with 16km to go. I tried and it worked, it’s fantastic.”

The race leader Richard CARAPAZ (ECU/MOVISTAR) extended his leaded by 7s: “I saw Miguel Angel Lopez attacking and I took his wheel to profit from his action. We took a small advantage. Those seven seconds help me for the closing time trial in Verona. My lead now is significant but, by Sunday, if I can increase it, it would be even more comfortable. It would be nice to be two riders from Movistar, Mikel Landa and I, on the final podium.”

First Grand Tour and first professional win; your Stage 18 winner, 25 year-old Damiano CIMA (ITA/NIPPO - VINI FANTINI - FAIZANE')

Damiano CIMA (ITA/NIPPO - VINI FANTINI - FAIZANE'): “To give my team visibility throughout breakaways was one of the roles I was assigned by my team. In addition to the visibility, today I delivered the stage victory. It wasn’t easy to make the breakaway today because many riders were playing according to the Maglia Ciclamino. We were three at the front and I thank my breakaway companions for the good cooperation we had. I remained as calm as I could in the last kilometres. I never looked back. I waited as much as possible to give it all in the last few hundred meters.”

The race leader Richard CARAPAZ (ECU/MOVISTAR): “I’m serene... I’m in my best shape! Joking, but knowing that I was going well, I asked for a pink bike even before I took the Maglia Rosa and it arrived yesterday for my birthday. I’m confident ahead of the last three stages. I feel a lot of emotions because there are a lot of mountains to come. I hope to deal with it the best possible way. I know that my country is paralysed now because of people watching the Giro.”

Pascal ACKERMANN (GER/BORA - HANSGROHE) has gotten over the narrow miss at the finish

Pascal ACKERMANN (GER/BORA - HANSGROHE) regains the Maglia Ciclamino with no more sprint stages left: “We had counted the points beforehand and we knew that it would be tight. When I took second place in the final sprint, I was disappointed because my teammates supported me all day and worked so hard. They all really did an amazing job. But when we realised that we re-gained the points jersey, it was a special moment for me and the whole team. But I definitely haven't won it outright yet, as there are three more difficult stages to come, which I have to survive. However, at the moment we are very happy to have regained the jersey and we will do our best to keep it.”

After a difficult year health wise, Esteban CHAVES (COL/MITCHELTON - SCOTT) celebrates his first win since last year's Giro with his parents

Your Stage 20 winner, Esteban CHAVES (COL/MITCHELTON - SCOTT): “This is pure happiness. It takes a heavy weight off my back. It's a relief to be a winner again. It shows I can do it. Because the last climb wasn't very steep, I had to attack many many times. A big thank you to everyone who supported me when I had a hard time.”

Race leader, Richard CARAPAZ (ECU/MOVISTAR): “I was expecting Miguel Angel Lopez to attack but we dealt with it the best possible way with Mikel Landa. It's another good day for us and we're looking forward to tomorrow. We're ready to defend the Maglia Rosa in a harder stage than today.”

Pello BILBAO (ESP/ASTANA PRO) comes around Mikel LANDA (ESP/MOVISTAR) to claim the final mountain stage followed by 3rd Giulio CICCONE (ITA/TREK - SEGAFREDO) + 2s, 4th Richard CARAPAZ (ECU/MOVISTAR) + 4s and 5th Vincenzo NIBALI (ITA/BAHRAIN - MERIDA)

The stage winner Pello Bilbao said in the press conference: “I was up the road to help Miguel Angel Lopez later. We wanted him to be on the final podium. With 50km to go, I started thinking of the stage win as it would be difficult for the peloton to come across. Towards the end, I thought I’d be faster than the climbers and I knew that Carapaz would work for Mikel Landa to win the stage. When such an opportunity to win a stage occurs, it’s worth trying.”

Your Stage 20 winner, Pello BILBAO (ESP/ASTANA PRO), third win of the race for Astana

Race leader, Richard CARAPAZ (ECU/MOVISTAR) will take a healthy 1:54 advantage into the final day TT: “I’m super happy with the work of the team. Tomorrow, it’ll be mano-a-mano. Nibali’s hug at the finish today was a very beautiful gesture. I’ve seen him very strong today but Mikel [Landa] and I were strong too. I knew Mikel was able to make the final podium, that’s why we dropped Roglic. The other thing we could achieve was the stage win with Mikel. It’s been close.”

As the first over Passo Manghen, Fausto Masnada wins the Cima Coppi which was originally to be awarded to the first over Passo Gavia (the highest pass of the race)

An emotional moment

Your Stage 21 ITT winner, Chad HAGA (USA/SUNWEB): “This is my first World Tour win but I started this morning believing strongly that I could win. I saved my legs these past few days. Watching Roglic and Nibali on TV, I had to convince myself that they were tired. It's a huge emotion. I'm speechless.”

Your 2019 GC podium: 2nd Vincenzo NIBALI (ITA/BAHRAIN - MERIDA) + 1:05, 1st Richard CARAPAZ (ECU/MOVISTAR) 90:01:47 and 3rd Primož ROGLIČ (SLO/JUMBO - VISMA) + 2:30

Second placed Vincenzo Nibali said: “This morning, I knew it would be extremely difficult to win the Giro d’Italia. But I thought I could do a good time trial. So I gave it all until the end. Second at the Giro is still a good result, especially thinking that six months ago, I was down with a big back pain after the crash at the Tour de France. To be back fighting for the overall victory in a Grand Tour is something positive.”

Third placed Primoz Roglic said: “It’s super nice to end up on the final podium after the different problems I’ve had. I felt tired today but after I badly suffered from my stomach in the mountains, I didn’t think I’d be competitive in this time trial.”

Your 2019 Giro d'Italia winner, Richard CARAPAZ (ECU/MOVISTAR) 90:01:47: “I want to enjoy this victory with my wife, my kids and speak on the phone with my parents. I’m very proud of what I achieved. I’m delighted to make my dream of winning a Grand Tour come true. We must never forget our childhood dreams. They can always become reality with hard work and determination. In my four years in European cycling, I realized that opportunities have to be caught. The thirty seconds I gained on stage 15 were fundamental. I profited from [Vincenzo] Nibali and [Primoz] Roglic watching each other. That’s where the Giro was decided. For me, it’s only the beginning I think. We always dream for more.”
