“It's been a couple of years and grand tours I've done for the general classification but my body wasn't responding earlier in the Giro. I did my best to keep the morale. This is my first grand tour victory. It's an incredible feeling, especially in an area like this I'm so familiar with, having done many training camps here. I knew all the roads. I was not confident at all to beat Mikel Landa. He's a very good sprinter.”

9th Tom DUMOULIN (SUNWEB) + 1:06 and 10th Nairo QUINTANA (MOVISTAR), 11th Vincenzo NIBALI (BAHRAIN - MERIDA)

Tom Dumoulin post-stage 18 said: “Nibali and Quintana were only focusing on me and trying to make me lose instead of trying to win. In the end, they lost some significant time to the other competitors. Riding like this, I hope they'll lose their podium spot. If this happens in Milan it would be very nice and I would be very happy. It would have been a dream scenario if Thibaut Pinot didn't take a minute on me. In the last climb I was feeling strong. So I decided to show them that I'm also awake.”

Your Stage 18 winner, Tejay VAN GARDEREN (BMC RACING), is the first American to win a Giro d'Italia mountain stage since Andy Hampsten in 1988

Mikel LANDA (SKY) wins Stage 19

“Possibly this is my nicest win because it took a lot of effort to stay at the front knowing that the chasers were coming from behind. We lost a friend [Michele Scarponi] just before the Giro so I didn’t want to lose the opportunity to pay tribute to him when I crossed the finishing line. My overall standing in the General Classification doesn’t correspond to what I was hoping for at the Giro but after the crash [on stage 9], I stayed calm and I tried hard to win a stage. My last week of racing confirms that I can try to win a Grand Tour.”

Top GC finisher today, 11th Thibaut PINOT (FDJ) + 8:09 and is now just 10s from the final podium spot

Your Stage 19 winner, Mikel LANDA (SKY), his biggest win since joining Team Sky last year

This is the third Giro stage win for Mikel Landa after stage 15 to Madonna di Campiglio and stage 16 to Aprica in 2015; the second of which was like today's – on May 26. All his victories have been claimed where Marco Pantani dominated in the 1990s

The gruppetto

The new race leader...

He hasn't looked sharp but Nairo Quintana (Movistar) has risen to the top and now leads Tom Dumoulin by 38s

“The level is really high in this Giro – that’s why the gaps aren’t big – and the Stelvio stage was very demanding. Because of the tiredness I’ve chosen to mark the riders who were the closest to me on GC. I’ll have to defend the lead tomorrow and I expect [Vincenzo] Nibali to attack tomorrow and [Thibaut] Pinot is also dangerous; he’s got the strongest team here. I’m not surprised by how well [Tom] Dumoulin is going in the Giro – his performance has only confirmed the improvements he's made in his climbing. Against him, we did what we could to take a bit of time on him today but we need to take more tomorrow because he’s the strongest time trialist.”

“Until 3km to go I only thought of gaining time, but in the last 3km I really had the stage win in mind. It's not easy to win a stage when racing for GC and this was my last opportunity. However it's not enough to have gained 25 seconds on Tom Dumoulin. Tomorrow's time trial suits him really well but I'll do my best to limit the losses and get the best possible final result.”
