June 21 update: The final and hardest stage featuring 2 cat 1, 1 cat 2 and a finishing HC climb to Saas-Fee (profile). Can Tony Martin wrap up a wire-to-wire win? Was he impressed with his Stage 8 climbing performance? “I was a little surprised, but I think we’re all pretty tired now. But it’s not over yet, there may be further attacks tomorrow.” — Steve

June 20 update: The first of two weekend mountain stages, stage 8 has a HC finishing climb to Verbier (profile). Lots of riders in GC contention one to two minutes back of Tony Martin who said after the Stage 7 time-trial, “I didn’t manage to gain as much of an advantage as I had hoped in the time-trial. But I’m still highly motivated and confident that I will make it to the podium at the end. The stage finishes are not quite as tough, but several riders have a good chance in the overall standings.” — Steve

June 18 update: The latter half of Stage 6 features a cat 2 then cat 3 climb before a descending finish into Delémont where the last 5 km are flat. The winner of this stage must climb, descend and sprint well. In other words, an all-rounder should win this stage which means another chance for Peter Sagan. — Steve

June 17 update: Stage 5 is the second and final sprint stage of this year's race. There are four categorized climbs but nothing more than a cat 3 and only one cat 4 in the second half of the race as we cross the north part of Switzerland. The difficult point of the stage will occur at the finish in Büren an der Aare where there are two 90 degree bends with less than 400m to go and the final 250m has a 5 % average grade. Peter Sagan with his good bike handling skills and good (slight) uphill sprint could be the favorite for this techincal stage finish. The riders will get one recon pass of the finish with 30 km to go. — Steve

June 14 update: The first road stage of this years race kickoffs with three of the most famous Swiss mountain passes at the midpoint of the 182 km Stage 2. However, the second half of the stage has just one cat 2 climb before a flat finish so we may have a small bunch sprint finish in Sarnen, located at the center of Switzerland. Peter Sagan has done well at Tour de Suisse before and Stage 2 is a perfect chance for him to get his first win at this year's race. — Steve
