June 14 update: An exciting Critérium du Dauphiné concludes with a mountain stage and the cat 1 climb to Courchevel. This is the first time ASO has used Courchevel since the 2005 Tour de France (see video below); however, apparently the Sunday finish (profile) doesn't go as far up the climb as 2005. It should be another great Contador vs. Froome battle before they resume at the Tour de France in just three weeks. — Steve

June 13 update: Stage 7 with five categorized climbs ending with two HC climbs is the Queen Stage of this year's event. The course meanders south of Lake Geneva starting from Ville-la-Grand and ending at a small, picturesque (see above) mountain hamlet, Finhaut, previously used by the Tour de Suisse and Tour de l'Avenir. Chris Froome leads by 12s over Alberto Contador which isn't much given the difficulty of this stage and the number of sections greater than 9% on the finishing climb (profile) including the last km. The climb is perfectly suited to Alberto Contador. — Steve

June 12 update: Stage 6 is a 179 km twisty, lumpy route from Grenoble to Poisy. The twisty finish in Poisy will test riders' allround skills with a Cat 4 climb 8 km to go and a 15% section before the flat final km. Arnaud Demare said pre-stage 6: "Plutôt une arrivée pour puncheur / A finish for punchers" or look for another successful break. — Steve

June 11 update: Stage 5 starts at the most southern point of the race, Sisteron, a valley town in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, and heads north over six categorized climbs (see below) to the rolling finish in La Mure. This is another good opportunity for a successful break. — Steve

June 10 update: Stage 4 features the same final 45 km often used by the Tour de France. With 13 km to go, the race crests the cat 2 Col de Manse (9.6 km, average grade 5.2 %) before the tricky descent into Gap where Rui Costa soloed into at the end of Stage 16 at the 2013 Tour de France and Thor Hushovd won a small bunch sprint in 2011. June 9 update: Stage 3 is hilly as we head south through the Puy-de-Dôme, Haute-Loire and Ardèche regions and then dead flat for the final 40 km and the finish in the small Ardèche town, Le Teil. This is the only chance for the sprinters this week, what few of them are here. — Steve

June 8 update: We'll waste no time getting down to business on the first road stage. As you can see from the list of categorized climbs below, Stage 2 features five categorized climbs including the generously labeled HC climb at the end of 156 km on Col du Béal in the Massif Central (south-central France). It's doubtful it is steep enough for big splits among the GC contenders, but there will be plenty of opportunities for a break. — Steve
