February 14 update: Stage 5 rolls for the first half of the 144 km course before the riders do three passes of Bousher Alamrat (350m) which was featured on Stage 3 (see photo above). The finish at the Ministry of Housing in Boshar, which hasn't been used before, is flat. — Steve

February 13 update: The climb part way up of Green Mountain (profile) has become the signature stage finish of this race. We've seen mountains in the background of previous stages and now we'll tackle one of them. Three of the final 4 kms average 13.5% and that's why climbers like Alberto Contador, Vincenzo Nibali, Cadel Evans, Joaquin Rodriguez, Christopher Froome, Peter Velits have shown up. Vincenzo Nibali won this stage last year by 10s over eventual overall winner Peter Velits and, in 2011, Robert Gesink won by 47s over Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky).

Starting from Al Saltiyah in Samail, the peloton will do three-quarters of a loop and finish part way up Jabal al Akhdhar which translates to "Green Mountain." At 3000m, it's the highest peak in Eastern Arabia and the riders will climb a new road up to the finish at 1235m. "You can't do all of the Green Mountain in February, because it's 18km long but we'll do the finish after six kilometres and I think that's enough," Eddy Merckx said. "It's at ten percent average and there are parts at 17 or 18%, so it'll be very tough." Steve

February 10 update: Starting from the coast (Sea of Oman) in northern Oman, the first stage heads inland towards Jabal Al Akhdhar (Green Mountain), but the course turns around at the foothills and back toward the coast after only a modest change in elevation. Expect a sprint finish at Sultan Qaboos University, the only public university in Oman, after 100 miles of racing. (Stage 4 will revisit this area with a finish part way up Green Mountain.) — Steve
