Normally the last finish, the narrow, twisty and scenic climb to the top of Mont Faron will be the penultimate stage of this year's Tour Méditerranéen and as usual it's the first mountaintop finish on the Europe Tour. February 9 update: The Mt Faron summit finish shook up the GC as expected, but the time-trialists are still at the top. Lars Boom slipped out of the race lead and now needs to make up just one second on new race leader Maxime Monfort (RadioShack) on the final stage. There are two categorized climbs on Stage 5, but the last one is 40 km from the finish. No time bonuses means Boom and his Blanco team will have to drop Monfort for the overall win. Two riders are tied for third just 2s back. — Steve

February 8 update: The traditional mountaintop finish on Mt Faron (5.5 km long, averages 9%, last 3 km are 10-12%) outside the city of Toulon (see photo above). The winner of this stage is often the overall winner but the Stage 2 individual time-trial has spread out the field more than in previous years. David Moncoutié, now retired, has won this stage more times than any other rider with 2011 being his fourth and final win (see photos below). — Steve
