September 26 update: Posted in the race summary table (see right) is an entire first draft of the possible 2013 Giro d'Italia route with stages 1 and 15 confirmed. The race will start from Naples on May 4th and finish in Brescia on May 26th. There will be more time-trialing than you normally see for this race with a team time trial on stage 2, a rumored 52 km rolling individual TT on stage 8 and a rumored mountain time-trial on Stage 18. The entire route is expected to be less difficult and more balanced than in previous years leading up to the 100th edition of the Tour de France.
The official route will be announced on September 30th in Milan, but unlike previous years no live video is expected due to a contract impasse with the Giro owner, RCS, and the usual broadcaster, RAI. I'll post big photos as usual later in the day. Check back for more details or email me if you have new information. — Steve

2013 Giro d'Italia Stage 15 Officially Unveiled at Interbike in Las Vegas
September 19 update: As part of their promotion of a Granfondo series in the U.S., RCS officially unveiled Stage 15 of the 2013 Giro d'Italia which confirms the rumor of a Cesana - Col du Galibier stage. Taking place on May 19th, it will start from Cesana Torinese, loop north over Col du Mocenis which gains 1600m over 16km for an average gain 10% before the massive two-tier Col du Galibier summit finish via Col du Telegraphe. The Tour de France finished via the easier south side last summer. The stage will honor Marco Pantani.
"In 1998, Marco Pantani was winning the Tour de France, making something very special on that mountain," said race director Michele Acquarone. Acquarone said it will be the "Prince stage" (after first calling it the King Stage) reserving the Queen Stage label for another stage. Pantani took control of the 1998 Tour on stage 15 by winning the Col du Galibier summit finish by several minutes. Pantani would go on to secure Italy’s first Tour victory since Felice Gimondi in 1965 and is the last Italian to win the Tour.
