Head and shoulders above the field. After some more good bike handling and a dominating sprint finish, Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) collected his fourth win in the first 7 stages before the race turned to the individual time-trial and two mountain stages to decide the GC. June 15 update: Now that the GC has tightened up significantly after stage 8, the final mountain stage should be even more interesting. This is the most difficult stage with two HC climbs in the second half before the cat 2 summit finish at Sörenberg in the center of Switzerland. Seven riders are within 43 seconds of winning the race. — Steve

June 12 update: A lumpy/hilly stage with six category three climbs mostly at the end on the finishing circuits around Gansingen not including the slight uphill finish. It's been noted that the Movistar and Liquigas teams haven't had an easy time controlling this race so look for more aggressive riding, especially at the start, by the many teams that don't want stage 5 to end in a sprint finish/ another Peter Sagan win. This stage starts where we finished yesterday in Trimbach/Olten and finishes just northeast in Gansingen near the border with Germany. The weather looks ominous again today. — Steve

June 11 update: This is a prototypical Tour de Suisse stage. Starting from Aarberg, the stage 3 finish host, Tuesday's stage 4 meanders through the green hills in northern Switzerland on its way to Trimbach (Olten). At the half way point, riders will climb the narrow cat 1 Scheltenpass (1051m). Like Monday's stage 3, there is a hilly, finishing circuit, but there is more climbing and the route is more technical although the finish is flat. The weather forecast calls for a 90% chance of rain so all things considered this is going to be very dicey stage. — Steve

June 10 update: Stage 3 heads north through the valley past the UCI headquarters in Aigle then around the east end of Lake Geneva before turning north towards Bern. The stage finishes with a hilly circuit west of Bern featuring cat 3 and cat 4 climbs before a descending and flat finish in Aarberg. — Steve

June 9 update: The first mountain stage. Starting from Verbania, Italy on the shores of Lake Maggiore, the route heads northwest over the Simplon Pass and then west through the Valias valley that separates the Pennine Alps from the Bernese Alps, past Brig, Sierre, Sion and Martigny. The stage ends with a left turn up to the ski resort at Verbier (8.8 km, avg. 7.5 %), where Alberto Contador won a Tour de France stage in 2009. — Steve

June 9 update: This is the same opening time-trial course from last year. From last year's preview: although labeled stage 1, the first day time-trial on the shores of beautiful Lugano would be called a prologue by most other races. The 7.3 ITT course will have a 150m climb cresting at km 3 followed a techincal descent. The rest of the course looks fairly typical with five 90-degree turns. — Steve
