The sprinter group finshed 40s back

Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara is comforted by a Swiss coach at the finish after crashing near the the finish. It's not clear which was more painful, his elbow injury which may prevent him from competing in the TT or the missed opportunity at winning the Olympic RR.

He can't retire now; Alexandr Vinokurov (Kaz) is the 2012 Olympic men's road race champion.

The unexpected podium: 2nd Rigoberto Uran (Colombia), 1st Alexandr Vinokurov (Kazakhstan) 5:45:57, 3rd Alexander Kristoff (Norway) + 8s.

Great Britain fans were left disappointed
