May 17 update: Stage 13 starts in Savona, situated on the Mediterranean Sea in the northwest part of Italy. This is a lumpy stage with a lone cat 4 climb early on. The Alps to the west will be on the riders's left the entire stage as we head north, a reminder that we are finally about to get to the high mountain stages which start Saturday with Stage 14.
After 122 km of racing, the shortest stage of this year's Giro d'Italia, we'll have a flat straight finish in Cervere. This is the first time tiny Cervere (pop. 1932) will host a Giro stage.
Mark Cavendish was aiming to win six stages at this year's Giro and so far he's won two. It's quite likely he'll abandon the Giro before the high mountains since there is only one more stage that suits him (Stage 18) after this one and he doesn't have much of a lead in the points competition. Therefore, expect Team Sky will work especially hard to set up a sprint finish and one final win for Mark Cavendish.
This stage will finish in the area of another RCS race, the semi-classic Gran Piemonte held each fall before the Giro di Lombardia classic. — Steve
