News and Updates for Coppi e Bartali 2012
Stage 5: Netapp's Jan Barta overtakes his teammate with a stage winning ITT performance and claims the overall win

This is Jan Barta after the Netapp team time trial win on Stage 2b. Unfortunately, our photographer, Sirotti, has not sent in any photos from stage 5 so this photo will have to do for now. He probably left immediately after the stage for Belgium to cover Gent-Wevelgem.

March 23 update: This year's race ends with a flat 14.3 km individual time trial. It looks good for the new race leader. For more stage details, see the stage profile, map and timetable in the race summary table (right). — Steve

Stage 4 results: Diego Ulissi (Lampre Isd) makes it two in a row, moves up to 3rd overall; Bartosz Huzarski (Team NetApp) now the race leader

March 21 update: The mountainous Stage 4 loop around Pavullo is the Queen Stage of this year's race. This course in various versions has been used before, most recently used for Stage 3 in 2010 (photos) when Przemyslaw Niemiec won from a two man break while breakmate Ivan Santaromita solidified his race lead which he would go on to win. They won by 48s over Riccardo Ricco' and the rest of the peloton was scattered throughout the course with the 15th best rider finishing 2:37 down.
The course was also used in 2008 when Cadel Evans launched an attack on the final climb and won by 23s over Stefano Garzelli and 1:19 over Vincenzo Nibali who finished 3rd. Again, riders were spread throughout the course.
The course bobs and weaves just about all the way on narrow roads. This beautiful, smooth 3D model with animated profile depicts the stage very well. There are two rolling climbs that touch 1200m elevation with steep sections and then there is the finishing climb to Pavullo nel Frignano (5 km @ 9.2%) before a flat finish.
You can bet the mountain men of Androni Giocattoli will be very aggressive on this stage.

March 22 update: The sprint stages and the TT are over and now it's every man for himself (almost); we have a hilly stage with a modest uphill finish (today's Stage 3), a mountain stage with a hill/summit finish and an individual time trial stage remaining. After Tuesday's TTT surprise where foreign Pro Continental squads Netapp and Endura Racing topped the standings you can guarantee there will be fireworks the next two days with last year's winning team Androni Giocattoli and the three ProTour squads looking to make back time.
Stage 3 starts in Fiorano Modenese, which also hosted the final stage last year (great photos). There are two cat 2 climbs (two passes over Valico di Riccò) before circuits featuring five passes through the hilltown Levizzano Rangone (photo above) including the modest (3km @ 3% according to the profile) uphill finish.

Stage 2b results: Giro d'Italia invite, Team Netapp, shows they deserve it; impressive TTT in Gatteo gives the German squad their first win of 2012

March 21 update: Later in the afternoon on Wednesday, riders will return to the roads of Gatteo for a team time trial. This is a chance for the ProTour teams (Astana, Liquigas and Lampre) to gain time on the less experienced Continental teams although the ProTour teams aren't their 'A' squads. The route is a 14.9 km loop in/around Gatteo without much elevation change. Great racing weather expected. For more stage details, see the stage profile, map and timetable in the race summary table (right). — Steve
Stage 2a results: No miscalculations, Elia Viviani (Liquigas-Cannondale) wins the sprint finish in Gatteo

March 21 update: Wednesday features two stages in one day which is a tradition for this race. In the morning, we'll have a 100 km road stage, a loop to the west of Gatteo featuring a couple of cat 3 hills at the half way point before a descent and flat finish back in Gatteo. For more stage details, see the stage profile, map and timetable in the race summary table (right). — Steve
Stage 1 results: Break succeeds. Andrea Palini (Idea) holds off the charging field to win in Riccione

March 19 update: As usual, for the last several years, Riccione, on the Adriatic riviera will host the first stage, a rolling circuit race that normally ends in a field sprint. The photo above is from last year's finish won by Manuel Belletti (Colnago-CSF Inox). This year Elia VIVIANI (Liquigas) will be the favorite. 2012 Settimana Internazionale di Coppi e Bartali Race Preview
March 19 update: Settimana Internazionale di Coppi e Bartali is an entertaining week of racing in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy featuring six stages over five days testing every cycling discipline; there are sprint stages, individual and team time trials and hilly/mountain stages on narrow roads. It's a 2.1 UCI (stage) race that attracted seven ProTours in 2009, but the overlap with the ProTour event, Volta a Catalunya since 2010, has hurt this fine race that has a rich history in Italian cycling.
Nonetheless, in addition to three ProTour teams (Liquigas, Lampre and Astana), an international selection of quality Pro Continental teams will round out the 2012 field. Last year's winner Emanuele Sella (Androni Giocattoli) returns with teammates Jose Rujano and Jose Serpa. Acqua & Sapone still smarting from their Giro d'Italia snub will bring their A squad (Betancour, Corioni, Garzelli, Ginanni). Astana will be led by Alexander Vinokourov (Astana) who is nearing retirement and hasn't had good form since crashing out of the Tour de France last summer. Liquigas, who won in 2010, are expected to bring Agnoli, Moser and Sarmiento. Jonathan Tiernan-Locke (Endura Racing) winner of several races in France earlier this year is confirmed. The winner of seven stages at Tour de Langkawi, Andrea Guardini (Farnese Vini) is also expected. The official startlist should be released anytime now. Update: Official startlist now posted.
