Edvald Boasson Hagen gets an unfortunate visit from race helicopter during crucial time trial — velonation
February 18 update: Stage 5 is an individual time-trial which should decide the top of the general classification. Robert Gesink has several good time-trialists within one minute of his lead. Edvald Boasson, in particular the winner of last year's Tour of Oman time-trial, @ 47 seconds is a real threat. We'll see whose advantage the lumpy out-and-back profile plays to. — Steve

The Finishing Climb (16:10 english) — eurosport
February 17 update: Believe it or not, we have a serious mountaintop finish en store for stage 4 (profile). As you see, three of the final 4 kms average 13.5% and that's why pure climbers like Robert Gesink (Rabobank) and Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha) have shown up this year. If Alexandre Vinokourov (Astana) can stay close to these guys he may be able to take the overall lead when it counts most... after the TT the following day.
Starting on the coast near Muscat, the peloton will head inland for 157 km and then finish part way up Jabal al Akhdhar which translates to "Green Mountain." At 3000m, it's the highest peak in Eastern Arabia and the riders will climb a new road up to the finish at 1235m. "You can't do all of the Green Mountain in February, because it's 18km long but we'll do the finish after six kilometres and I think that's enough," Eddy Merckx said. "It's at ten percent average and there are parts at 17 or 18%, so it'll be very tough."

February 16 update: Stage 3 is a loop at the most eastern point of Oman starting and ending in Sur. There is small, gradual climb in the last third otherwise the route should be uneventful. However, a 16 mph from the west is forecasted, so the peloton will have a stiff crosswind along the coast for the start and inland for the return leg. Look for a split in the peloton and a successful break. — Steve

... more to come... February 14 update: Stage 2 is similar in profile to stage 1; a flat stage with one hill in the middle albeit a bigger one. After starting in Oman's capital city, Muscat, the peloton will loop around and head east along the coast towards the finish in Al Wutayya after a modest 139 km. Along the way, they will detour inland over a 395m hill at the half point before returning to the coast. There should be another tailwind and a sprint finish. — Steve

2011 Tour of Oman Race Preview
February 14 update: Oman like Qatar seems an unlikely country to hold a major race. However, with mightly ASO organizing it, famous past riders like Bernard Hinault and Eddy Merckx involved and a rich host country putting it on it doesn't seem so difficult. After what was apparently a successful inaugural event last year, Tour of Oman is back with a strong field. The official startlist is now posted.
Unlike Qatar, Oman has some hills. In fact, this year there is a mountaintop finish (profile) where 3 of the final 4 kms average 13.5%. That's why climbers like Robert Gesink (Rabobank), Dennis Menchov (Geox) and Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha) are coming this year. Lots of quality sprinters are on the startlist including Taylor Phinney and Thor Hushovd, both making their first appearance of the year, last year's winner (and the only winner of this event), Fabian Cancellera, as well as many of last week's top performers at Tour of Qatar. So both the World Road and TT champions will be racing. — Steve
