June 18 update: So we've reached the final day where it is usual for an individual time-trial to decide this year's race. This year we have a lumpy, somewhat technical 32 km course around Schaffhausen, yesterday's stage 8 finish. The course suits Levi Leipheimer well who sits 2 minutes back of race leader Damiano Cunego. Tune in to say whether Levi can leap onto the top step of the podium on the final day like Frank Schleck did last year. Update: Its windy, non-technical strong man's course. — Steve

Michael Albasini won the strung finish at Serfaus in 2009
June 16 update: Stage 7 has the distinction of neither starting or finishing in Switzerland yet the majority of the route is in the homeland. Starting from Vaduz Liechtenstein, the peloton will head south back into Switzerland, do a west-to-east arc through well-known spots such as Chur and Davos before heading north across the border into Austria for the cat 1 ski resort finish at Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. So don't forget your passport!

In addition to the cat 1 finish, there is the hors categorie Flüelapass (13 km @ 6.3% - profile) at the midpoint of the stage. The finishing climb to Serfaus (profile) averages 9% for 5 km before leveling out for the final 4 to 5 km. The Tour de Suisse visited Serfus just two years ago when Michael Albasini won ahead of Fabian Cancellara and Damiano Cunego. Riders were strung out at the finish (see photo above), but the top 15 received the same time so expect Friday's Stage 7 to come back together during the final 4-5 km when it flattens out at the top. — Steve

June 16 update: Stage 6 is a rolling stage until we get to the hardest climb at this year's Tour de Suisse, the HC summit finish at Triesenberg/Malbun (14.4 km at 8.6%) in Liechtenstein. The last km is 12.5%. The Tour de Suisse last finished in Malbun in 2004, here's the cyclingnews race report: Totschnig wins; Jeker in gold after Ullrich falters on final climb. Look to last year's overall winner, Frank Schleck (Leopard-Trek), to finally leap into action on Thursday. The finishing climb suits him and he finished 3rd in Malbun in 2004 so he'll know it well. — Steve

June 15 update: It's true, even the sprint stages at the Tour de Suisse aren't easy. Yesterday's "sprint stage" unhitched a bunch of sprinters before they could strut their stuff. It's just not the lumps that take their toll, its the narrow twisty roads that string out the nervous field. Stage 5 has its fair share of lumps too including four cat 3 or cat 4 climbs on the way to Tobel-Tägerschen, a tiny village in the far north part of Switzerland in the Zurich area. Yesterday's stage 4 finish averaged 2% for 2 km, but stage 5 will be slightly easier averaging just under 2% (1.8%) for the final km so expect more sprinters to keep in the fold today. Like Stage 4, there will be a finishing circuit. — Steve
