June 18 update: So we've reached the final day where it is usual for an individual time-trial to decide this year's race. This year we have a lumpy, somewhat technical 32 km course around Schaffhausen, yesterday's stage 8 finish. The course suits Levi Leipheimer well who sits 2 minutes back of race leader Damiano Cunego. Tune in to say whether Levi can leap onto the top step of the podium on the final day like Frank Schleck did last year. Update: Its windy, non-technical strong man's course. — Steve

Stage 8 results: Peter Sagan (Liquigas), the youngest rider in the race, wins his second stage this week

Stage 8 results 1 Peter Sagan (Svk) Liquigas-Cannondale 3:52:00 2 Matthew Harley Goss (Aus) HTC-Highroad 3 Ben Swift (GBr) Sky 4 Koldo Fernandez (Spa) Euskaltel-Euskadi 5 Thor Hushovd (Nor) Team Garmin-Cervelo 6 Jose Joaquin Rojas Gil (Spa) Movistar 7 Gerald Ciolek (Ger) Quickstep 8 Ian Stannard (GBr) Sky 9 Simon Clarke (Aus) Astana 10 Tejay Van Garderen (USA) HTC-Highroad General classification after Stage 8 1 Damiano Cunego (Ita) Lampre - ISD 31:01:49 2 Steven Kruijswijk (Ned) Rabobank + 1:36 3 Frank Schleck (Lux) Leopard Trek + 1:41 4 Levi Leipheimer (USA) RadioShack + 1:59 5 Bauke Mollema (Ned) Rabobank + 2:11 6 Jakob Fuglsang (Den) Leopard Trek + 2:38

June 17 update: The flat finish in Schaffhausen will likely be the only field sprint of this year's race. It could be a little dodgy though if rain materializes as forecasted.

Stage 7 results: Thomas De Gendt solos the final climb to give Vacansoleil-DCM their second win this week; no changes at the top of the gc

Michael Albasini won the strung finish at Serfaus in 2009
June 16 update: Stage 7 has the distinction of neither starting or finishing in Switzerland yet the majority of the route is in the homeland. Starting from Vaduz Liechtenstein, the peloton will head south back into Switzerland, do a west-to-east arc through well-known spots such as Chur and Davos before heading north across the border into Austria for the cat 1 ski resort finish at Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis. So don't forget your passport!
In addition to the cat 1 finish, there is the hors categorie Flüelapass (13 km @ 6.3% - profile) at the midpoint of the stage. The finishing climb to Serfaus (profile) averages 9% for 5 km before leveling out for the final 4 to 5 km. The Tour de Suisse visited Serfus just two years ago when Michael Albasini won ahead of Fabian Cancellara and Damiano Cunego. Riders were strung out at the finish (see photo above), but the top 15 received the same time so expect Friday's Stage 7 to come back together during the final 4-5 km when it flattens out at the top. — Steve

Stage 6 results: Steven Kruijswijk (Rabobank) leaps clear in the final 3 km of the 14 km Malbun climb for his first pro win

June 16 update: Stage 6 is a rolling stage until we get to the hardest climb at this year's Tour de Suisse, the HC summit finish at Triesenberg/Malbun (14.4 km at 8.6%) in Liechtenstein. The last km is 12.5%. The Tour de Suisse last finished in Malbun in 2004, here's the cyclingnews race report: Totschnig wins; Jeker in gold after Ullrich falters on final climb. Look to last year's overall winner, Frank Schleck (Leopard-Trek), to finally leap into action on Thursday. The finishing climb suits him and he finished 3rd in Malbun in 2004 so he'll know it well. — Steve

June 15 update: It's true, even the sprint stages at the Tour de Suisse aren't easy. Yesterday's "sprint stage" unhitched a bunch of sprinters before they could strut their stuff. It's just not the lumps that take their toll, its the narrow twisty roads that string out the nervous field. Stage 5 has its fair share of lumps too including four cat 3 or cat 4 climbs on the way to Tobel-Tägerschen, a tiny village in the far north part of Switzerland in the Zurich area. Yesterday's stage 4 finish averaged 2% for 2 km, but stage 5 will be slightly easier averaging just under 2% (1.8%) for the final km so expect more sprinters to keep in the fold today. Like Stage 4, there will be a finishing circuit. — Steve

Stage 4 results: The World Champ, Thor Hushovd (Garmin), gets his first win of the year ahead of yesterday's mountain stage winner, Peter Sagan

June 14 update: Stage 4 is the first opportunity for the sprinters as we make our way to the northern part of Switzerland. There is however a cat 2 climb in the first half of the stage after leaving yesterday's finish in Grindelwald and a cat 3 climb on the finishing circuit in Huttwil ridden twice. The last 2 km are slighly uphill averaging 2%. — Steve

June 13 update: Stage 2 is another short mountain stage with a HC and a Cat 1 climb in store, but this time we'll have a descending finish into Grindelwald, a pictureque tourist and adventure village in the Bernese Alps. The stage is just 108 km long.
Yours truly has fond memories of the first big climb, the Grimselpass at km 50. Back in July 2002 on a simply gorgeous day, I cycled this area (along with the Furkapass). Definitely, one of the best days I ever spent on a bike. Amazing scenery and switchbacks in perfect weather. — Steve

June 11 update: Stage 1 is the first of four mountain stages. It starts with the HC Nufenenpass, the high point of this year's race (2480m) right after leaving the start in Airolo. The 148 km course finishes with the Cat 1 climb to Crans-Montana which levels out with 10 km to go before uphill finish with several km to go. Crans-Montana is often a stop for the Tour de Suisse most recently won by Tony Martin (HTC) in 2009 and Thomas Dekker (Rabobank) in 2007. — Steve

Beautiful Lake Lugano (photo credit: lbolla)
June 10 update: Although labeled stage 1, the first day time-trial on the shores of beautiful Lugano would be called a prologue by most other races. The 7.3 ITT course will have a 150m climb cresting at km 3 followed a techincal descent. The rest of the course looks fairly typical with five 90-degree turns. I'll go out on a limb and predict Fabian Cancellara for the win. — Steve
