June 18 update: Stage 3 climbs the HC Port de Bales before the descent finish into Bagneres-de-Luchon, the same finish sequence as Stage 15 from the 2010 Tour de France. That's the stage Andy Schleck, while wearing the Yellow Jersey, dropped his chain and ultimately lost the Tour de France. You can assume the Route du Sud version of the Tour de France stage, which also climbs the cat 1 Col du Mente, will be less melodramatic. — Steve

2011 Race Preview
June 7 update: Route du Sud, now in its 35th edition, is a short (4 day) 2.1 stage race in the spectacular French Pyrénées. Some use this race as a warm-up for the Tour de France, but the field is mostly made up of domestic and pro continental riders who will be watching the Tour de France on TV like most riders.
Many famous riders have won this race early in their career including David Moncoutie, Thomas Voeckler, Sandy Casar, Michael Rogers, Levi Leipheimer, Jonathan Vaughter and Laurent Jalabert. Last year, we saw fine performances from young French riders Florian Vachon (Bretagne Schuller) and Biel Kadri (Ag2R) who have been stepped it up this year in bigger races. This year Ag2R will be sending Giro d'Italia standouts John Gadret and Hubert Dupont.
For 2011, the race will have four road stages over four days with stages 2 and stage 3 being mountain stages. Stage 2 St Gaudens to Cauterets will feature famous Tour de France cat 1 climbs Col d'Aspin and Col du Tourmalet in the High Pyrenees before the uphill finish in Cauterets. Our correspondent, Colin Flockton, will provide photos for each stage including moto photos from the Queen Stage (Stage 2).
