January 29 update: Stage 3 starts out hilly, but the second half of the race and the traditional finish in Reggio Calabria are dead flat. Lampre's Daniele Pietropolli will take a 6s lead over Jose Serpa and 9s lead over Daniel Oss into the final day. In 2008, Pietropolli, riding for LPR-Brakes, won the final stage and gained the powder blue leader's jersey from Barloworld's Steve Cummings when it counted most. There will be live text updates for the final stage. — Steve

January 28 update: Stage 2 goes coast to coast from the Ionian Sea, west to the Tyrrhenian Sea. It's not as impressive as it sounds but it is the longest of three stages this year at 195 km. After starting in Soverato, the peloton will head west over the hilly Calabrian interior before the gradual climb into Vibo Valentia and the slightly downhill finish. — Steve

January 27 update: A flat stage with a gradual uphill finish in Catanzaro. Mark Cavendish won his first Grand Tour stage in Catanzaro (photo above) during the 2008 Giro d'Italia. Pizzo to Catanzaro was the first stage after the Giro d'Italia returned to the mainland in 2008 which you may recall started on Sicily for the first three days. See the profile and route timetable for more details on this year's route (right). Big photos after the stage. — Steve
