April 21 update: This year's race concludes with a mountaintop finish on Madonna di Campiglio which Marco Pantani won at the 1999 Giro d’Italia to give him a commanding overall lead of more than five minutes heading into the final day. But, in a dramatic turn of events, he was disqualified before starting stage 21 for a hematocrit level exceeding 50 per cent and he was never the same rider or person again.
The cat 1 Madonna di Campiglio is 11.5 km long with a modest incline of 5.4% by Italian standards (see profile below). Before the final climb there are two cat 2s. See the race summary table (r) for the stage profile, map and timetable.

2011 Giro del Trentino Race Preview
April 18 update: As the Critérium du Dauphiné is to the Tour de France, the Giro del Trentino is to the Giro d'Italia. Both the Critérium du Dauphiné and the Giro del Trentino are mountainous stage race preludes to Grand Tours the following month in their respective countries. With the Giro d'Italia just three weeks away, this is one last chance for some riders to impress their team managers and make their team's selection.
This year's Giro del Trentino, the 35th edition, has been upgraded to 2.HC status so we'll see a stronger and more diverse field. In particular, there will be four U.S. teams, a first for this event: ProTour teams RadioShack and BMC Racing will be joined by Pro Continental teams Team Type 1 and UnitedHealthcare.
Of the four stages, there isn't a single stage suited to sprinters; this is strictly a climber and tt stage race. We'll start off with a short TT in Riva del Garda, a common starting point for this event, followed by a hilly stage and two mountain stages all ending in either hilltop or summit finishes. Should be interesting to see who shows their cards and who is out for training. See the profiles, maps and timetables in the race summary table (right). — Steve
