May 25 update: Stage 18 will head south down the east side of Lake Como on roads used by the fall classic, Giro di Lombardia. The race will then head southeast and pass through Bergamo, a popular destination for past Giro d'Italias and site of one of the more entertaining finishes in Giro history back in 2007 (see video link below). But, this year we'll carry on east, head back into the mountains and hit the cat 2 climb, Passo di Ganda, which crests 32 km from the finish in San Pellegrino Terme. The descent before the flat finish looks very technical. Liquigas' Vincenzo Nibali, who was quiet yesterday, may employ his dare-devil descending skills, go for this stage win and gain back a few seconds on Alberto Contador and Michele Scarponi in the process.
By the way, the well-known San Pellegrino carbonated mineral water drink is indeed produced by the Stage 18 finish host. — Steve
