5월 11일: 몽테벨지니 디 메르코글리아노에서의 마운틴 탑 피니쉬를 포함, 두 개의 cat 2 오르막이 있는 스테이지 7은 올해 지로 디탈리아의 여덟 개 산악 스테이지 중 첫번 째 입니다. 스테이지 6으로부터 남쪽으로 200km 이동 후, 푸르름이 가득한 녹지에서 펼쳐지는 아름다운 스테이지가 될 것입니다. 선수들은 110km로서 올해 지로의 최단거리 스테이지인 마달로니로 부터 몽테벨지니의 결승점을 향해 남동쪽으로 우회하게됩니다.

몽테벨지니 디 메르코글리아노는 지로 팬 여러분들의 눈길을 사로잡을 것입니다. 바로  HYPERLINK "http://autobus.cyclingnews.com/road/2007/giro07/?id=results/giro074" 2007년 리퀴개스의 다닐로 디 루카가 리카르도 리코를 제치고  우승했기 때문이죠. 두 선수 모두 그 후 도핑 금지 위반으로 시련을 겪었습니다. 올해엔 다닐로 디 루카가 복귀했으니 그가 4년 전과 비교해 어떤 모습을 보일지 흥미롭군요.

상뚜아리오 디 몽테벨지니로 향하는 마지막 오르막은 17km로 카테고리 2로선 긴 편이지만 평균 5%에 최대 10%의 경사도는 지로 기준으로는 평이한 편입니다. 끝없이 펼쳐지는 것처럼 보일 급격한 스위치 백들이 이번 오르막이 숨겨둔 서슬퍼런 칼날을 드러낼 것입니다. 위의 사진에서 보듯이 스위치 백들이 무성한 숲을 갈라 놓았습니다. 2007년에는 1위 부터 10위까지 13초 차이였고, 41위 선수가 1분 뒤진 채로 결승점을 통과했습니다. 이번 주 처음으로 많은 최종 우승 후보들이 선두권으로 뛰어오르며 종합 순위가 적절히 뒤바뀌는 것을 기대하세요.
