Tretia etapa sa vracia na západ, s cieľom v meste Rapallo na Talianskej riviére, severne od Cinque Terre. V roku 1999 Francúz Richard Virenque (Team Polti) vyhral 13. etapu 82. ročníka Giro d'Italia (reportáž a fotky), ktorá končila v Rapallo po štyroch ťažkých horských prémiách. Tohtoročná tretia etapa síce míňa veľké stúpania v severných Apeninách, ale na programe sú dve horské prémie – tretej a štvrtej kategórie v druhej polovici etapy, ktoré sľubujú akciu. Po štarte na rovine v Reggio Emilia bude pelotón postupne stúpať na Passo del Bocco (výška 950m), ktorý má pár strmých úsekov blízko vrcholu, ktoré (dočasne?) reoztrhajú pelotón 40 km pred cieľom v tejto 173 km dlhej etape. Nasleduje horská prémia 4. kategórie 10 km pred cieľom, strategicky umiestnená ako možný začiatok rozhodujúceho úniku, a neklasifikovaný kopček 4 km pred cieľovou čiarou. Posledný kilometer je dole kopcom. Táto etapa je postavená pre šprint malej skupiny v úniku. -- Ladislav Kader
