La 3ra etapa concluirá en Rapallo, sobre la costa italiana, al norte de Cinque Terre. En 1999, el francés Richard Virenque (Team Polti) ganó una complicada etapa 13 de la edición 82º del Giro, finalizada en Rapallo, luego de cuatro pasadas por las montañas.

En esta edición no tendremos esas grandes escaladas a los Apeninos, sin embargo habrá dos puertos, uno de 3ra y otro de 4ta categoria, durante la segunda parte de la etapa.

Comenzando en las planicies de Reggio Emilia el pelotón tendrá una escalada gradual al Passo del Bocco (alt. 950 m.) que cuenta con algunas sesiones empinadas que podrian dividir (temporalmente?) al pelotón con 40 kilómetros para terminar esta etapa de 173 kilómetros.

El puerto de 4 categoría está ubicado a 10 kilómetros de la meta, estrategicamente ideal para realizar un ataque y una colina no clasificada yace a 4 km del arribo. El último kilómetro es levemente en descenso, en calles sinuosas y angostas, no aptas para sprints en grupo. -- Ariel
