May 5 post: The Giro d'Italia is back to its tradition of the starting with a team time-trial. This year being the 150th anniversary of Italy's unification, it's fitting that the 94th Giro d'Italia kicks off in Torino (Turin in English), Italy's first capital city. The 19.3 km route from the suburbs (Venaria Reale) to downtown Torino is not difficult, but there will be a few tight corners and tram lines that will be a test for those teams that don't practice this discipline often enough. It's a short enough course that TTT lightweights like Colnago - Csf Inox and Euskaltel - Euskadi shouldn't lose too much time.
Arch TTT enemies HTC-Highroad and Garmin-Cervelo will be the heavy favorites along with possibly Saxo Bank while Liquigas, Sky, Astana and Rabobank should be in the hunt too. Liquigas is especially good at TTTs on home spoil (excluding their B-Squad mishap at Coppi e Bartali in April). RadioShack, normally a contender, will be sending their A-squad to the Tour of California later this month. Teams will start in four minute intervals. See the start order and times below — Steve
