March 26 update: This is another hilly stage but likely not difficult enough to shake up the GC. Joaquim Rodríguez is up by 10 seconds and if he survives the series of cat 3 climbs on the circuits in Barcelona at the end of this stage then we'll declare him the unofficial winner before the ceremonial stage 7 on Sunday. race summary table (r) for the stage profile, map, timetable. —

March 25 update: The riders should be rested since the start today in Ascó is where we left off yesterday... making this the only stage without a transfer. Stage 5 is a hilly romp through the surrounding area ending with an uphill finish (6% for the final 300m) in tiny, old
Cabacés (

) after five catergorized climbs. See the

March 25 update: It would be nice to spend more time in the Pyrenees; however, this is a one week race and we have places to go and people to see. So, stage 4 is a downhill run back towards the coast with two hilly finishing laps around Ascó to make it interesting. The finish features a slight uphill in the final km after descending the main hill on the circuit (
Alt de Paumeres el. 460m according to the timetable or 510m according to the profile) for the second time. This finish represents a chance for Luis León Sánchez to chip away at Joaquim Rodríguez's surprising 48 second GC lead over him while Xavier Tondo is 10 seconds back in 2nd. See the
race summary table (r) for the stage profile, map, timetable. —

March 23 update: Stage 3 takes us into the Spanish Pyrenees via a roller coaster ride up three cat 2 climbs, a beyond category climb and other numerous hills that skirt the
Cadi Moixero Natural Park. The day ends with a windy descent and a flat 2.5 km run into La Seu d' Urgell which saw the Tour de France pass by its doors during the Barcelona-Andorra mountain stage last summer. Most of the riders will know these roads well which will be especially important if the 30% chance of rain materializes. See the
race summary table (right) for the stage profile, map and timetable. —

Stage 2 preview:
Salt (Girona) → Banyoles, 183 km (hilly/rolling)
March 22 update: Stage 2 is a hilly and rolling day in the Girona area, base camp for many pro cyclists in Europe. The stage finishes with three, flat 9 km circuits in Banyoles and there will be plenty of time for the race to come back together after the cat 1 climb at km 58. Again, there is no live video for this event, only delayed. See the

2010 provisional official rosters
Interactive maps now posted for all stages
March 15 update: Thanks to bikemap.net, we now have interactive maps and profiles for all stages. Since Spanish race organizers often don't bother with stage maps, these may be the only maps you'll get. See the 'map' links in the
race summary table (right). As mentioned previously, this race will get a lot more attention this year. Currently,
Alberto Contador, Ivan Basso, Levi Leipheimer, Frank Schleck, Jens Voigt, Mark Cavendish, Ezequiel Mosquera and Mark Cavendish are among the big names expected at the start line. —

March 11 update: See the profile and timetable links in the

2010 Race Details
Feburary 21 update: The
Volta Ciclista a Catalunya is Spain's second biggest bike race after the
Vuelta a Espana and the third oldest (1911) stage race in the world behind the
Tour de France (1903) and the
Giro d'Italia (1909).
This year's race will get a lot more attention since it has moved on the calendar from May to late March so it no longer overlaps with the Giro d'Italia. Now the
Tour of California will be the May alternative to the Giro for those looking for a one week stage race that month.
On Feburary 17th, the organizers quietly released the host towns and stage distances but little else. I've mapped out a general route map (see below) to get the big picture. The race starts in the Costa Brava area with a 3.6 km prologue (Stage 1) in Lloret de Mar. Stage 2 will be a hilly, circuitous route around Girona, a popular European base for many North American pro cyclists. Stage 3 is a mountain stage through the Spanish Pyrenees. Stage 4 heads south to Ascó which will be the only town to host a road race start and finish in this year's edition. Stage 6 heads east along the scenic coastline to Barcelona which also hosted the stage 6 finish at the 2009 Tour de France (in front of massive crowds). The final stage will start and finish just outside of Barcelona with the finish taking place at Circuit de Catalunya -- a racetrack. More to come... including stage maps, profiles, team rosters and live coverage details. Alberto Contador and Ivan Basso have this race on their calendars. Expect lots of other big names at the start line as well since this race is one of only 16 ProTour events. — Steve
