Stage 5 preview: Sant'Antioco → Cagliari (flat)

Feburary 26 update: The final stage this Saturday is flat and there won't be any realistic opportunities for Chris Horner to erase the small four-second lead that Roman Kreuziger earned for his stage 2 win. Unless Kreuziger runs off the road while admiriing the great scenery, he'll win the GC.

Alessandro Petacchi (Lampre) would have been favored to win the sprint finish in Sardinia's capital city, Cagliari, but he'll be very sore after Friday's stage 4 crash. This is will be a gorgeous stage along the south part of the island so we should have some good race photos post-race from this largely ceremonial stage.

Stage 4 preview: Carbonia → Iglesias (rolling/hilly)

Feburary 25 update: Friday's circuitous romp around the southwest part of the island and the tight GC standings should make for an interesting stage. Stage 4 is rolling and hilly with a modest cat 1 climb 30 km from the finish where we'll have a slight uphill finish as the last 1.5 km averages a 2.5% grade. Since the final stage this Saturday is flat, Friday's stage will be Chris Horner's only realistic opportunity to erase the small four-second lead that Roman Kreuziger earned for his stage 2 win. Horner could turn the table by gapping Kreuziger on the run into Iglesias and/or earning bonus seconds for a podium finish. It won't easy as Liquigas has the strongest team at the race. The weather shouldn't not be a factor for stage 4.

Rather than putting up race updates on their "Live Race" page, the official site decided to remove it instead :( Hopefully, the daily Sirotti photos are filling some of the live coverage and video highlights void. This gorgeous race deserves better and the organizers need to sort it out.

Feburary 24 update: Thursday's Stage 3 will be the first stage for the sprinters as we gradually descend southwest back to sea-level for the finish in Oristano on the coast. Just like stage 1, the peloton will be heading into a stiff headwind the entire day so expect a late finish.

Again, the official site is suppose to provide some sort of live (text) coverage but nothing materialized for stage 1 and stage 2. So far no video highights have been posted either. RAI Sport is showing delayed coverage at approximately 18:00 CET each day so if you see a good unrestricted RAI Sport feed then let me know. This is a beautiful race so it's too bad there isn't (better) video coverage.

Stage 2 preview: Macomer → Monte Ortobene/Nuoro (hilly)

Also follow steephill on Twitter for the latest race info and video updates.
Feburary 23 update: [Correction] Stage two finishes at 922m el. on Monte Ortobene ( great photo of Monte Ortobene overlooking Nuoro). In a recent preview, I indicated there was a 20km descent into Nuoro based on the stage profile; however, the timetable indicates more precisely that the stage finishes (partially) up Monte Ortobene. Overall, this stage isn't too difficult/hilly but the gradual mountaintop finish makes Wednesday the Queen Stage compared to the other four days.

Stage 1 was very slow (33 kph) because the peloton headed into the 18 mph wind for the entire stage. For stage 2, the riders get a tailwind which will also help a break succeed and the stage should finish early in Nuoro/Monte Ortobene.

The official site was suppose to provide some sort of live (text) coverage but nothing materialized for stage 1. No stage 1 video highights have been posted either. RAI Sport is showing delayed coverage at approximately 18:00 CET each day so if you see a good unrestricted RAI Sport feed then let me know. This is a beautiful race so it's too bad there isn't (better) video coverage.

Stage 1 preview: Olbia → Bonorva (hilly)

An early break last year on the hills outside Olbia which will also host the start of this year's Giro di Sardegna

Also follow steephill on Twitter for the latest race info and video updates.
Feburary 22 update: This year's Giro di Sardegna is more difficult than last year's and the first two stages will have the most interesting finishes. After looking at the stage profiles and the finishes, it's no wonder that fewer sprinters and more climbers and classic riders have shown up this year. Stage 1 will start in Olbia on the northeast side of the island. We'll then head southwest through the hilly interior and finish with a gradual uphill finish in Bonorva which gains a modest over 430m in the final 10km. There is also a "cat 1" climb at 1049m el. at the 100km point which could thin the field out 44km from the finish line.

Feburary 22 update: Squads ship in for Giro di Sardegnacyclingnews

2010 Preview/Race Details

Also follow steephill on Twitter for the latest race info and video updates.
Feburary 18 update: Giro di Sardegna is a five day stage race (2.1) that takes place on the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (after Sicily). As a bit of background, the island of Sardegna (English: Sardinia) was granted regional autonomy status from Italy in 1947 and you may recall that Sardinia hosted the first three stages of the 2007 Giro d'Italia. After an eleven year absence, the Giro di Sardegna returned in 2009; it was first held in 1958. This hilly, scenic race is now part of the UCI Europe Tour.

Like other five day stage races at this time of year, the race is hilly, but not too difficult. However, stage two finishes on the 922m high Monte Ortobene (). We'll call this the Queen Stage. Stage 1 also has a nice uphill finish in Bonorva.

In general, the finishes this year are more difficult so it won't be sprinter-fest like last year. Maybe that's why last year's winner, Daniele Bennati, will leave it up to his strong Liquigas team (Vincenzo NIBALI, Fabio SABATINI and Roman KREUZIGER) to retain the title since he will not be defending it. Team RadioStack will bring Chris HORNER and Janez BRAJKOVIC. Some other big names include Alexandr KOLOBNEV (Katusha), Alessandro PETACCHI (Lampre), Thomas VOECKLER (BBox Bouygues Telecom), Stefano GARZELLI and Francesco FAILLI (Acqua e Sapone),   Michele SCARPONI (Androni Giocattoli), Matizo MONTAGUTI (De Rosa - Stac Plastic) winner of the recent Giro della Provincia di Reggio Calabria, Mattia GAVAZZI (Colnago), Giovanni VISCONTI and Oscar GATTO (ISD), and Yuriy METLUSHENKO (Amore & Vita - Conad) .

Live video is unlikely, but we'll have big photos from Sirotti after each stage and video highlights. The official site will also have live text updates. — Steve
