This is the fourth year in a row that the Giro will feature a team time trial, but there are some differences that set this year's version apart. Unlike the previous three years, this is not a technical course on a satellite island to kickoff the event. Instead, the course is almost a dead straight line from Savigliano to Cuneo in northern Italy with a very slight, uphill grade the entire way. The 224m gain over 32.5km isn't very much so it shouldn't be a factor. The winners and distances of the past three editions were Liquigas (26.5 km), Garmin (28 km) and HTC-Columbia (20.5 km) (photos). So you can see that this year's TTT is the longest of the last four and some GC favorites like Domenico Pozzovivo of Colnago - CSF Inox could lose over three minutes on this day.
May 11 Update: Pozzovivo is one of the many riders/Italians who's GC hopes were dashed after some difficult days in the Netherlands and before racing starts on Italian/home soil. He's down 9+ minutes to the race leaders even before the TTT starts. — Steve
