The peloton rolls past an icon of the Dutch landscape | As usual, Tour de France like crowds out lining the roads of Holland for this very popular Dutch road race | Holland is definitely not flat. Frank Schleck climbs the Gulpenerberg, near the city of Gulpen early in the race before a serious crash that sent him to the hospital on a stretcher. The narrow, twisty Amstel Gold roads and road furniture produce as many crashes as Paris-Roubaix according to Sean Kelly. |
Much later on the famous Eyserbosweg climb, Liquigas' Roman Kreuziger makes a break with 19k to go | Double Dutch: After the Keutenberg, the penultimate climb, Robert Gesink (Rabobank, right) attacked the lead group and was joined several km later by Serguei Ivanov (Katusha) and countryman, Karsten Kroon (Saxo Bank) | Fans waiting patiently at the 700m point of the finishing climb (the Cauberg) |
Russia's Serguei Ivanov (Katusha) denies a Dutch win by grinding it out better than Karsten Kroon (Saxo Bank) on the Cauberg. Winning time: 6.38.31 (38.814 km/h) | Robert Gesink (Rabobank) was able to hold on for 3rd @ 8 seconds making it 2nd and 3rd for the Netherlands. Behind him, Philippe Gilbert (Bel) of Silence-Lotto wins the sprint finish for 4th ahead of last year's winner Damiano Cunego (Ita) of Lampre | Podium L-to-R: 2nd Karsten Kroon (Ned) Team Saxo Bank, 1st Sergei Ivanov (Rus) Team Katusha, 3rd Robert Gesink (Ned) Rabobank. Ivanov called today, "the greatest win of my career" |
